After it grossed $100M in only 10 days, it's nosurprise that Warner Bros. has announced plans for a secondSCOOBY-DOO feature, with the original starring cast returning underthe anticipated helm of SCOOBY-DOO director Raja Gosnell. Theannouncement was made by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, president ofworldwide production for Warner Bros. Pictures. The upcoming filmwill be produced by Mosaic Media Group's Charles Roven, and byRichard Suckle. Stars Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar,Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini will rejoin their animatedco-star, Scooby-Doo, in a screenplay by original scribe James Gunn.Production is expected to begin early next year in Los Angeles for a2004 release. Regarding the decision to go ahead with the sequel, diBonaventura said, "We promised audiences a summer movie that thewhole family could enjoy together, and they responded by coming outand giving us a tremendous opening weekend. Our cast and filmmakersreally brought this animated series to life on the big screen, and wefeel certain that we've got another great SCOOBY-DOO story to tell inmovie theaters two years from now." SCOOBY-DOO debuted in theatersJune 14, 2002 and earned $56.4M its first weekend, giving the filmthe third highest grossing debut of 2002 (behind SPIDER-MAN and STARWARS: EPISODE II).
