Satellite Awards Honors Pan's Labyrinth

On Dec. 17, 2006, the International Press Academy announced the winners of the 11th Satellite Awards. Winning in the category of Motion Picture, Animated or Mixed Media was PAN'S LABYRINTH. Guillermo Del Toro's adult fairy tale beat out CARS, HAPPY FEET, FLUSHED AWAY and ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN's John Knoll and Hall Hickell took home the prize for Visual Effects.

In the New Media categories, SUPERMAN ULTIMATE COLLECTOR'S EDITION won for Best Overall DVD while THE LITTLE MERMAID and THE SIMPSONS -- THE COMPLETE EIGHTH SEASON won for Youth DVD and DVD Release of a TV show, respectively. FIFA '07 won Outstanding Sports Game while NEW SUPER MARIO BROTHERS took home the prize in the Action/Adventure Game category. KINGDOM HEARTS II garnered the Outstanding Game Based on a Previous Medium award, COMPANY OF HEROES won for Outstanding Puzzle/Strategy Game and THE ELDER SCROLLS IV: OBLIVION was honored as Outstanding Role-Playing Game.

Richard Donner picked up the Nikola Tesla prize in recognition of visionary achievements in filmmaking technology. In awarding Donner the honor, the IPA stated, "Donner raised the bar on the genre by insisting that the comic book superhero should be treated with authenticity and respect for the source material rather than as camp. SUPERMAN also had the distinction of creating astonishing special effects that not only pre-dated contemporary computer-generated images, but often equaled or surpassed them."
