In the article "Open Season Diary: Rendering and Lighting" there was a short section on occlusion. The picture caption talked about cheats that were needed for the scene to keep expenses down.
My 3d work is with primitives so I am unclear as to how they knew to look for cheats for this scene. I know, the scene has a lot of hair in it, but the whole movie is one big fur ball of animals.
