Archive: The Begrudging Curse

To me the curse is mine, only because it is taking me far longer than I first imagined to post all the archival reviews from years of newsletters. Hopefully, it's not a curse to my wonderful (though small) reader base. This archive update, at least, comes quicker than the gap between the first and the second. The new films added are from the first part of my newsletter that went out on Aug. 13, 2004. It's a collection of good films, even some very good films.

DE-LOVELY (2004)
This musical biography of Cole Porter is brought to life by the compelling performances of its lead actors Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd.

HERO (2004)
From director Yimou Zhang, this colorful action/fantasy is so beautiful to look at that you will never forget its gripping visual poetry.

JU-ON: THE GRUDGE (2004)
The first of the theatrical releases in this Japanese horror series is filled with ghostly, creepy imagery, improving on the story with fuller characters.

13 GOING ON 30 (2004)
This kid-stuck-in-an-adult-body flicks turns out to a fairly charming romantic comedy thanks to star Jennifer Garner.

BUS 174 (2003)
This documentary puts into context the story of Rio’s most famous hostage situation, using gripping news footage of the actual event.

DUMMY (2003)
This indie comedy stars Oscar winner Adrian Brody as shy man who follows his dream of becoming a ventriloquist and features a surprisingly funny performance from Milla Jovovich.

THE EYE (2003)
This Chinese-Singapore co-production is a nice chiller chronicling a corneal transplant recipient who begins seeing dead people.

HELLBOY (2004)
One of the better superhero movies ever made, because it knows how to balance the characters, action and humor without talking down to the audience.
