The 1998 Annecy International Animated Film Festival took place Tuesday, May 26 through Sunday, May 31 in Annecy, France. The festival award winners are listed below.

Films Jury: Jean Rozat, Luminia Cazacu, Priit Pärn and Lejf Marcussen. Raoul Servais' grand prize winner, Nocturnal Butterflies. Raoul Servais of Belgium took home both the coveted "Annecy 98" Grand Prize for Best Short Film and the FIPRESCI International Film Critic's Prize, for his new film Nocturnal Butterflies. Additional winners are as follows:

Special Jury Prize: The Man With Pendulous Arms by Laurent Gorgiard (France).

Best First Film: Sientje by Christa Moesker (Netherlands).

Special Mention: Back to Europe by Riho Unt (Estonia).

Special Mention for Sound: Heavy Stock: The Sound of the Railway by Michael Salkeld (U.K.).

Grand Prize, Feature Film: I Married a Strange Person by Bill Plympton (U.S.A.).

Public Prize: Geri's Game by Jan Pinkava (U.S.A.).

Children's Jury Prize: Stage Fright by Steve Box (U.K.).

Television
Jury: Steve Walsh, Marie-Line Petrequin and Francis Nielsen.

TV Film, Grand Prize: Die Hard by Konstantin Bronzit (Russia).

TV Series, Special Prize (up to 12 minutes): Kipper directed by Mike Stuart of HIT Entertainment (U.K.) and Space Goofs directed by Thomas Szabo of Gaumont Multimedia (France).

TV Series, Special Prize (13-26 minutes): The Angry Beavers, "Part A: Bummer of Love, Part B: Food of the Clods" directed by Mitchell Schauer of Nickelodeon (U.S.A.).

TV Special, Special Prize: Charlie's Christmas by Jacques-Rémy Girerd of Folimage (France).

Commissioned Film, Educational, Scientific or Industrial: The Horror From Hell by Greg Lawson (Netherlands).

Commissioned Film, Advertising Film: I Would Like to be as Silly as You by Jürgen Haas (Germany).

Commissioned Film, Best Animated Sequence: Flying Daddy by Keita Kurosaka (Japan).

Graduation Films
Jury: Alain Séraphine, Samir Farid and Juan Manuel Antin.
