Abano Producións, Letrario Team for Animated Feature ‘Mu-Ki-Ra’

The ‘Unicorn Wars’ producer and Colombian production studio have revealed their upcoming 2D animated feature co-production, set to be spotlighted at the 2024 Cannes’ Marché du Film Animation Day.

Spain’s Abano Producións (Unicorn Wars) has teamed with Colombian production studio Letrario for the new 2D animated co-production Mu-Ki-Ra. Created, directed, and co-written by Colombian actress and screenwriter Estefanía Piñeres Duque, the feature is set to be showcased at the 2024 Cannes’ Marché du Film Animation Day.

Set in a land haunted by monsters made of vegetation, Mu-Ki-Ra follows Cleo, a 13-year-old girl, who faces her worst nightmare when Martín, her little brother, is devoured by one. With the help of Iolo, a magical old lady, she travels to the jungle to fetch Mukira, the monster who took Martín, to perform a ritual to bring her brother back.

Piñeres recently told Variety, “Our film is inspired by Latin American childhood experiences, which are often immersed in complex environments. It wishes to be a celebration of their light and a reflection upon their darkness.”

As for the aesthetics of the film, Piñeres divulged they were inspired by “the works of Brecht Evens and techniques of the Emberá and Kuna peoples, and other Latin American craftsmanship.”

The film’s voice cast includes Maria Fernanda Marín, Isa Mosquera, Carmenza Gómez, and Witsey Mena.

Production for Mu-Ki-Ra is currently underway, with delivery scheduled for 2025.
