Starz Launches Most Extensive Re-Branding in TV History

Starz Ent. Group LLC (SEG) threw the switch on the largest re-branding effort in the history of television. Effective at 6:00 am (MT) March 28, 2005, all 13 of the Starz and Encore channels sport new on-air looks and logos. Eleven channels have been renamed. Three new channels Starz Edge, Starz Comedy and Starz Kids & Family launched. In addition, an upgraded website for Starz, www.starz.com, and a new site for Encore, www.encoretv.com, will debut April 1.

Princess Natasha Leaps From the Web to Cartoon Network and Little, Brown Books

America Online has signed major licensing deals with the Cartoon Network and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, which extend its original PRINCESS NATASHA webisode series beyond the Internet. Twenty original animated short cartoons developed for the KOL kids service by Animation Collective, an independent animation house, will be available on television later this year, marking one of the first online children's animated properties to make this transition.

Enterprise to End with Back-to-Back Episodes

As a special farewell to the popular series, UPN will broadcast the final two episodes of STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE back-to-back on May 13 (8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT).

The first episode "Terra Prime" will complete a two-part arc revealing the first steps in the foundation of the Federation. Captain Archer and the crew must stop Paxton (guest star Peter Weller), a well-armed, radical human isolationist leader, who is threatening to destroy Starfleet Command unless all aliens leave Earth immediately.

4Kids Ent. Inc. announced that it has signed an exclusive agreement with Hasbro Inc. to broadcast the new G.I. JOE SIGMA SIX animated series on 4Kids TV, beginning September 2005. 4KIDS TV is the 4Kids Ent.'s four hours of children's programming airing Saturday mornings on FOX.

Disney Toons Up With Big Deals

Walt Disney Television Animation president Barry Blumberg has signed an overall deal with Mike Moon and lengthened his long-term agreement with KIM POSSIBLE creators Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle, reports VARIETY. The new deals give the studio first look rights to the toon makers TV projects. The move is the studios effort to ramp up animation production to fill timeslot on its Playhouse Disney, Jetix and Disney Channel networks.

animate! tv is commissioning another slate of experimental personal projects for television, with running times of up to 6 minutes and production budgets between £5,000 and £20,000. animate! believes that animation is not, and indeed never has been, exclusively driven by frame-by-frame process but by wider notions of synthesis. animate! supports innovative content and 'agenda' as well as new forms and techniques.

Tractor Tom Plows Up Roadshow Ent. Deal

Contender Entertainment Group has secured a VHS/DVD deal in Australia with Roadshow Entertainment for its pre-school favorite TRACTOR TOM.

TRACTOR TOM has become an enormous success amongst pre-schoolers, combining a farmyard environment, cheery sing-alongs and bright imagery. It debuted down under in November 2004 on the Seven Network.

Roadshow Ent. will release the first TRACTOR TOM title, BAA BAA TOM SHEEP & OTHER STORIES VHS/DVD on May 19, supported by a huge integrated marketing campaign.

Nick Slates Five Animated & Whoopi Goldberg Live Series For 2005

Nickelodeon will roll out six new live-action and animated series for the 2005-06 season, and premiere 248 episodes of 18 returning hit Nick and Nick Jr. series, totaling 124 hours of new, original programming. Cyma Zarghami, president, Nickelodeon Television, announced the ambitious slate during the networks upfront meeting presentation to advertisers in New York City.

Carmen Electra Joins Tripping The Rift

Carmen Electra (SUMMERLAND) has joined the cast of SCI FI Channel's animated series TRIPPING THE RIFT. The second 13-episode season of the risqué half-hour series from IDT Film Roman (THE SIMPSONS, KING OF THE HILL, X-MEN: EVOLUTION) is slated to debut in July. The series follows the adventures of Jupiter 42, a smuggling vessel led by a stumpy purple alien named Chode who, along with his colorful group of misfit shipmates, battles archenemies and new obstacles in space each week.

Nicktoons Enrolls Xilam Animation’s Shuriken School

Nicktoons, Nickelodeon's digital channel for kids' animated hits, has ordered SHURIKEN SCHOOL, a quirky playground comedy with a martial arts twist about a boy's adventures at Ninja school, from Paris-based studio, Xilam Animation. The 26x13 series is based on an original idea by Spanish studio Zinkia Entertainment and will air on Nicktoons in 2006.

King of the Hill Scribes Ink Big Deal with Paramount

KING OF THE HILL writers Aron Abrams and Greg Thompson have signed a two-year, seven-figure deal with Paramount, reports VARIETY. As part of the deal, the duo will create, develop and exec produce series programming. In addition, the team will be developing a live-action CBS series for comedian Aisha Tyler. The deal is a move by new president David Stapf to strengthen the list of writers working for the studio.
