Speed Racer Goes Back to Animation on Nicktoons

Lionsgate has announced that its first animated TV series will be an updated version of SPEED RACER, reports the trades. Nicktoons has already inked a deal to air the first 26 episodes. The launch of the animated series will coincide with the debut of Warner Bros. live-action SPEED RACER feature, which is being directed by the Wachowski brothers.

"It seemed like the right time to do a revival," said Ken Katsumoto, evp of family entertainment at Lionsgate. "When this opportunity arose to revive such a classic property, we jumped."

Hana's Helpline to Jump Channel to France

HANA'S HELPLINE, a stop-motion animation series for children, recently launched onto a daily slot on Five's Milkshake in the U.K. wings its way to France 5 to air this autumn. The 26x10 series, created by Welsh-based animation experts, Calon, features the agony aunt helpline service run by Hana the duck, solving the problems of Ellen the ostrich, Bert the bear, Muzzie the mouse and others.

The Spectacular Spider-Man Title of New Marvel Series for Kids WB! on The CW

The new SPIDER-MAN series coming to the Kids' WB! on The CW is now officially titled, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, it was announced today (June 18, 2007) by Kids' WB! vp/gm Betsy McGowen.

"The use of the SPECTACULAR title is an homage to Marvel's wildly popular series of SPIDER-MAN comics, and is very reflective of the enthusiasm and high regard we have for the production," McGowen said. "This promises to be a stand-out animated series that will perfectly complement both Sony Ent.'s box office-shattering films and the amped-up action on Kids' WB! every Saturday."

Bozo the Clown Coming to DVD

Bozo the Clown is coming to DVD with the collection BOZO THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS CLOWN hitting the street on June 26, 2007. The four-disc collector's set features 30 live-action full color episodes of this classic as nationally syndicated for 47 years, with each episode including a five-minute cartoon. Special features include an interview with Larry "Bozo the Clown" Harmon. The episodes are restored and digitally remastered from film masters held by Harmon, who administers the rights to the Bozo character. Infinity Entertainment distributes the product.

Nicktoons Launches Second Season of 'Secret Show'

Nicktoons will unveil 13 new episodes of THE SECRET SHOW beginning Sunday, July 1, 2007, at 8:00 pm, and in conjunction will debut a new tie-in online game called, SUMMER MARATHON MISSION. Viewers also will get the opportunity to catch up on the first season of the show with a four-hour marathon from 4-8:00 pm. New episodes of the series will air subsequent Sundays at 8:00 pm, with encores Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm.

HBO Acquires First 3D Series on African Culture

Home Box Office (HBO) acquired MAGIC CELLAR, the first animated series to be based on African culture, for broadcast in the United States. This acquisition of an African animated television program is a first, thereby making HBO's move a historic sale. The multi-award winning 3D animated series is based on 20 folk tales, including interviews with elders from villages in Africa.

MAGIC CELLAR will be shown on HBO Family in the U.S. and Bermuda. The first episode premieres Saturday, June 23. Each episode will first air Saturday and repeat on Thursday.

Hairy Tooth Fairy Spinning TV Deal

Spanish Filmax Ent. and Argentina-based Patagonik are in talks to co-develop a TV series based on the hit animated feature THE HAIRY TOOTH FAIRY, reports VARIETY. The feature was a mix of live-action and CG, but the series will be completely animated.

The TV show will expand on the story of the feature, which followed a young girl who rescues a kidnapped sugartooth fairy, named Ratoncito Perez.

Vooz Goes Green with Myo & Ga

Vooz Co. Ltd., the creator of the love messenger character Pucca, is branching out to the kids market this year with the new series MYO & GA, which combines adventure, fantasy, slap stick comedy and an environmental message. The series sees the world through the eyes of Ga, the sea turtle.

Vooz presented 2:30x7 episodes of the short animation during the 2007 MIPTV and upon garnering positive feedback from television and new media industries, has decided to develop the idea as a larger co-production.

Nickelodeon Goes By Animated Wayside June 25

WAYSIDE, a new half-hour animated series that takes school to new heights debuts on Nickelodeon on June 25 at 12:30 pm. The 26-episode series about a wacky 30-story grade school will air regularly on weekdays at 12:30 pm. The series is based on the bestselling Wayside School book series by Louis Sachar (SIDEWAYS STORIES FROM WAYSIDE SCHOOL, HOLES) and produced by Nelvana Studios.

Storm Hawks Sails Onto TV & Internet

Nerd Corps Ent.'s first original property, STORM HAWKS, is making both its online and on-air worldwide launch this week.

Following a successful Friday night sneak peek of a one-hour special episode, STORM HAWKS began airing Mondays, as part of Cartoon Network's new summer programming lineup at 7:00 pm (ET, PT). Other broadcasters that will be debuting the series this summer or fall include YTV in Canada; Cartoon Network in the U.K., France and Latin America; terrestrial broadcaster France 3 and Canadian French-language broadcaster VRAK.

Anthem Makes VFX Journey for Marco Polo

Anthem Visual Effects recently completed more than 100 visual effects shots for MARCO POLO, a miniseries and feature film produced by RHI Ent.

The epic story was shot entirely on location in China and is a compelling exploration of the trials and triumph of one of history's most famous, yet enigmatic figures. Ian Somerhalder (LOST) plays Marco Polo, the 13th century Venetian trader enlisted to accompany a pair of priests to the court of the fabled Mongol warlord and despot of the mysterious East, Kublai Khan, played by Brian Dennehy (COCOON, OUR FATHERS).

YTV Orders Amberwood Ent.'s 3D Animated RollBots

Amberwood Ent. announced today (June 5, 2007) that YTV, a division of Corus Ent., has ordered ROLLBOTS, a 3D animated action-comedy series for kids 6-11.

The 26x30 series rolls into full production this month and has been partially funded by YTV and the Canadian Television Fund.

ROLLBOTS is based on an original idea by Michael Milligan about perfectly round robots that roll at extreme speeds on rollercoaster type tracks through Flip City, a community that contains 11 different tribes of rollbots.

On June 15, 2007, TELETOON's The Spin Cycle is dedicated to dads with four father-themed cartoons. In WHAT'S WITH ANDY?, Andy goes on a camping trip with his dad and grandpa and tries his best to get grandpa back into his old pranking ways. Right Time, Right Place for Rat Man?

"My cell phone plays the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra," brags Rat Man. It rings, and sure enough, in marches the orchestra to play a short allegro non troppo. Looking a little like Calvin in his "Stupendous Man" outfit, the dim-witted not-so-superhero is the protagonist of a much anticipated TV series (52x13), co-produced by public TV network RAI and Florence-based Stranimani, that will start airing Saturday mornings on RAI, it was announced during a press conference in Rome.

Pirates 3 Cable Rights Go To USA

USA Network has gained the cable rights to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END from Disney-ABC Domestic Television, reports the trades. USA already holds the cable rights to the previous films in the trilogy, CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL and DEAD MAN'S CHEST.

The price tag for the third PIRATES film is rumored to have been between $25-30 million. USA paid between $20-25 for DEAD MAN'S CHEST. The deal gives USA the network cable window, starting in Sept. 2009.

Soprano's Ramirez Guns for Heroes

NBC will be adding THE SOPRANOS actress Dania Ramirez to the cast of its hit series, HEROES, in the fall, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Ramirez is actually not new to the world of superheroes having played Callisto in X-MEN: THE LAST STAND.

The actress will play a new hero named Maya in the NBC Universal TV Studio series. For now her powers are on the QT.

WGBH & Studio B to Produce Martha Speaks Animated Series For Public TV

WGBH Boston and Canada's Studio B Prods. Inc. have teamed up to develop and co-produce a new animated series based on the award-winning MARTHA SPEAKS children's book series by Susan Meddaugh, for public television in fall 2008.

The property will be developed into 40 half-hour episodes, designed to enrich children's vocabulary within the context of compelling stories. Studio B has international distribution rights for the property.
