Lex Luthor Actor Departing Smallville

REUTERS and THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER confirm that actor Michael Rosenbaum is leaving the CW's SMALLVILLE after seven seasons playing Superman nemesis Lex Luthor.

He will be replaced by two new villains, but might appear as a guest on the show's upcoming eighth season.

"It is time for me to start the next chapter of my life and career," Rosenbaum said Thursday. "I hope that I gave you some enjoyment over the years and that you found my portrayal of Lex Luthor to be satisfying."

Turner Commissions U.K. Version of Preschool Series Hi-5

Turner Broadcasting has commissioned a local version of popular television series HI-5. Set to air on Turner's preschool channel Cartoonito, Hi-5 will be produced by BAFTA award-winning production company Darrall Macqueen.

Forty half-hour episodes of the U.K. local version will be produced, with casting to commence next month. Also partnering on the U.K. series is free-to-air broadcaster GMTV who will begin showing the series in 2009 following Cartoonito's premier in 2008.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT creator Mitch Hurwitz has enlisted three of his former cast members, Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Henry Winkler, to voice roles in his animated Fox pilot SIT DOWN, SHUT UP, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Tantamount, Sony and Granada are producing SIT DOWN, which revolves around the staff members at a high school who are too preoccupied with their own needs and lives to worry much about the students.

Based on a live-action Australian series, Fox greenlit the pilot based on a table read last month.

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS "Pest of the West" (Friday, April 11) marked the fourth Nickelodeon telecast this year to shoot to the top of basic cable among total viewers, as well as handily ranking as number one on broadcast and cable TV among kids 2-11, 6-11 and tweens 9-14.

MTV Networks International today announced the launch of Nickelodeon Poland, the latest addition to its rapidly growing portfolio of channels in Central and Eastern Europe.

Nickelodeon Poland is a Polish language channel dedicated exclusively to kids and joins the other MTVNI channel brands currently available in Poland -- MTV, VIVA, VH1 and Comedy Central, which was the first local Comedy Central service to launch outside of the US.

X-Files Vet John Shiban Added Raimi Production

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert have hired John Shiban (THE X-FILES, STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE) to executive produce WIZARD'S FIRST RULE, per VARIETY.

Shiban is currently with the CW's SUPERNATURAL and will help turn Terry Goodkind's book series into a weekly TV series.

WIZARD takes place in a fantasy world of magic and wizards, and centers on a man called the Seeker, who is destined to save the world.

Shiban told VARIETY he will draw on his experience with THE X-FILES for the show's structure and sensibility.

KidsCo, the joint venture channel owned by NBC Universal, DIC Entertainment and Corus Entertainment is offering a video-on-demand service in South Korea.

The new VOD service is a first for the channel and is the result of a major agreement between KidsCo and South Korean operator, hanaTV, the leading IPTV company in the territory.

The agreement sees leading KidsCo programming including BABAR, MADELINE, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, CYBERCHASE, FRANKLIN and ROLIE POLIE OLIE available on demand in the region.

Nicktoons Network To Premiere New Speed Racer Series In May

Nicktoons Network, will premiere SPEED RACER: THE NEXT GENERATION, a new animated series that builds on the legendary adventures of the iconic original series, on Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m. (ET).

The 90-minute premiere will launch the SPEED RACER: THE NEXT GENERATION television series just prior to the Lionsgate DVD release on Tuesday, May 6, and the live-action Warner Bros. feature film, directed by the Wachowskis, on Friday, May 9. Playhouse Disney Comes To Latin America

Disney and ESPN Media Networks Latin America announced the launch of their new Playhouse Disney Channel in Latin America, with programming especially designed for preschoolers, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Playhouse Disney Channel joins existing Disney Channel and Jetix cable channels, present in 19 countries in the region, to provide entertainment for the entire family.

As of June 1, 2008, Playhouse Disney Channel will be offered in the basic subscription package offered by Cablevision, Multicanal and Teledigital.
