John Cox, who has projects in development at the USA Network and ESPN, has been tapped by by Joel Silver for Warner Bros. Pictures to write SGT. ROCK, an adaptation of DC Comics' World War II adventure comic, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.
Sgt. Frank Rock was the leader of his infantry unit called Easy Company. He first appeared in a 1959 issue of OUR ARMY AT WAR. As the characters popularity rose, the comic was renamed SGT. ROCK in 1977 and ran until 1988.

The Fukuoka City Public Library has restored to its original length the first animated film made in Japan after World War II, reports JAPAN TIMES. A complete version of PRINCESS OF BAGHDAD had not existed for years.
The library will show the 48-minute movie based on THE ARABIAN NIGHTS on Saturday and Sunday at its theater.
A Fukuoka resident donated a nearly complete version to the library in 2004. Since then, the library collaborated with the National Film Center in Tokyo to restore the film to its original length.

Nevercenter Ltd. Co. has released its new modeler Silo, version 1.16, which now includes support for linking to RenderMan-compliant renderers and POV-ray for direct rendering from Silo. Options include the ability to add header and footer files to the render file, and the ability to optionally include or exclude light, camera and material information. In addition, version 1.16s improvements include a more advanced universal manipulator and manipulator options, as well as some tool enhancements and workflow improvements.

Softimage announced that it is lowering the price of SOFTIMAGE|XSI, a 3D nonlinear production environment, by as much as 50% until Dec. 22, 2003. In the annals of did we need a second version, why are we getting a third, Fox Searchlight has announced that they will be remaking the 1958s classic horror flick THE FLY, reported DAILY VARIETY. Commercials, shorts and music video director Todd Lincoln will make his feature debut on the picture, taking on both directing and writing duties. His agency CAA set up the deal. Lincoln says his remake will be based more on the 1958 version rather than the David Cronenberg 1986 remake. He even hints at his version featuring a fly that, well, flies.
OK, the TWO TOWERS DVD (New Line Home Entertainment, $29.95) arrives in stores Aug. 26, 2003, looking glorious in its widescreen edition and packed with the kinds of extras we've come to expect (two documentaries, eight featurettes, plus Sean Astin's short film, THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT, along with the making of it). But keep in mind: this is the theatrical version of Peter Jackson's blockbuster fantasy. There's the extended version still to come on Nov. 18, featuring some 43 extra minutes. So hold on tight and enjoy the second part of the journey.

Caligari Corporation has announced the latest version of its flagship product, trueSpace. Version 6.5 features a new animation engine aimed at meeting the needs of game developers and professional animators. TrueSpace's modeling and design environment can be used for projects ranging from print or Web design to full character animation. Version 6.5's new non-linear animation capability allows users to compose complex animations using clips of motion sequences.
Profound Effects, Inc. has launched version 1.2 of Useful Things for Adobe After Effects. In addition to more than 40 new or improved effects, version 1.2 focuses on improving ease-of-use. Among these improvements is a keyword search function that lets users quickly find the effect they want. With about 200 effects already available, and more being added continually, finding effects had to become "a quick and easy" task according to Perry Kivolowitz, CEO of Profound Effects, Inc.
DigiCel, Inc. has released version 3.6 of its FlipBook Pro software for traditional animation. This new version offers more palette control to simplify large productions, additional lighting effects for shadows, and highlights and glows with soft edges for a more natural and three-dimensional look.
Framestore CFC will be supervising the visual effects for THUNDERBIRDS, the forthcoming live-action movie based on Gerry Anderson's 1960s puppet-animated TV series. The series has enjoyed a huge resurgence of popularity recently, following its re-screenings on BBC2 in the UK and on TechTV in the U.S. The live-action version of THUNDERBIRDS will feature the Tracy brothers memorable spacecraft as well as Tracy Island, the elaborately mechanized tropical base of the International Rescue team.
Montreal-based software developer Crater Software has released the latest version of its 2D cel animation software, CTP Pro version 1.5. In addition to reducing the list price of the software package to $1,299, the company has also released CTP Pro Lite, a limited version of CTP with the same ease of use interface, priced at $299. According to Crater Software President, Joe Alonso, "We have always looked out for the animation student and independent animator.
Pixologic, Inc. will be unveiling its ZBrush version 1.5 at the upcoming MacWorld Expo 2002 (July 17-19, 2002, Booth #1446) and SIGGRAPH (July 23-25, 2002, Booth #5048). ZBrush is a 2D and 3D image creation and processing application, powered by a real-time rendering engine. Based on proprietary "Pixol" rendering technology, ZBrush enables artists to paint with color, material, texture and depth as well as manipulate the canvas and sculpt and texture 3D models.
DigiCel, Inc. has released the latest version of its 2D animation software, FlipBook version 3.1. This newest version adds curved path, multi-plane camera moves and xsheet printing to the features that are part of version 3.0, released in February 2002. Version 3 features include more speed, master color palettes, color models and copy and paste between scenes. Version 3.1 is available as a free upgrade to all customers currently using version 3.
