Turner Commissions U.K. Version of Preschool Series Hi-5

Turner Broadcasting has commissioned a local version of popular television series HI-5. Set to air on Turner's preschool channel Cartoonito, Hi-5 will be produced by BAFTA award-winning production company Darrall Macqueen.

Forty half-hour episodes of the U.K. local version will be produced, with casting to commence next month. Also partnering on the U.K. series is free-to-air broadcaster GMTV who will begin showing the series in 2009 following Cartoonito's premier in 2008.

Microsoft Corp. has announced it will start selling a cheaper version of the Xbox 360 in Japan, reports the AP. This is the same bare-bones version that began selling in the U.S. late last year. The low-price-tagged Xbox will hit stores March 6 for approximately $260. The move is a way for Microsoft to compete against the more popular Japanese products, the Wii from Nintendo and PlayStation 3 from Sony.

THE KINGDOM director Peter Berg is set to direct a new big-screen version of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel DUNE, reports MTV. Berg said that the film would have been his next project, however the writers strike is preventing the film from moving forward through development. Berg commented that David Lynch's version "left the door wide open for a remake."

Mummy's Sommers to Direct G.I. Joe

Stephen Sommers (THE MUMMY) has signed on to direct a live-action feature version of G.I. JOE for Paramount Pictures, reports the trades. The studio is aggressively looking for a screenwriter and hopes to start production in February, eyeing summer 2009 for a release.

VARIETY reports that Sommers was hired in the room after pitching his version of the film to Paramount chairman/CEO Brad Grey and production president Brad Weston Wednesday night.

Penn & Pop Picked to Voice North American Version of Persepolis

Sean Penn and Iggy Pop will voice roles in the North American version of the French animated film, PERSEPOLIS, which Sony Pictures Classics is releasing to that territory in late 2007, according to HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Based on Iranian author Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel autobiographies, the tale is the true story of a precocious girl growing up in Iran during the Islamic revolution.

This is the first animation role for Penn, who will lend his voice to the father of the young girl struggling with life in Iran during and after the fall of the Shah in 1979.

Les Lascars Making Its Way to Theaters

French 30x1 TV series LES LASCARS will be making a transition to the big screen, reports VARIETY. France's biggest-selling pop artist Diam's, Diane Krueger and Vincent Cassel will be lending their voices to the French version while L.A. rapper Fat Lip will be on the American version.

The 10 million Euros ($13.5 million) production will be distributed by Bac Films, which is part of Millimages. Canal Plus and France 2 are co-producing.

Albert Pereria Lazaro and Emmanuel Klotz are co-directing the film.
