WIA-NY's November General Meeting

WIA's November meeting will feature special speaker Jeff Zahn, a music supervisor at his company The Jaril Group. Zahn will provide attendees with a solid background in the creative, business, financial and legal worlds of music for TV and film, specifically animation. He'll give real-world numbers, names, agencies, creative alternatives, etc., and throw in some interesting stories.

Zahn has been the music supervisor for ARTHUR & FRIENDS and wrote music for CAILLOU.

Grateful Dead Join Rock Band Videogame

Harmonix, MTV Games and Rhino Ent. announced a deal that will bring the legendary band Grateful Dead to the highly anticipated music videogame ROCK BAND. The iconic group is making 18 master recordings from its diverse catalog available as digitally distributed game levels following ROCK BAND's release this holiday season. Among the songs available will be the classic Dead tracks "Truckin'," "Uncle John's Band," "Touch of Grey," "Sugar Magnolia" and "Casey Jones."

New VP Signals Nickelodeon/Viacom Expansion

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) has announced the appointment of Arwed-Ralf Grenzbach as Vice President, Videogames, Music and Special Products. The newly created role signals efforts by NVCP to further advance its international consumer products business into the rapidly expanding interactive and music arena. Grenzbach, who is London-based, will report to Jean-Philippe Randisi, Vice President and Managing Director, NVCP EMEA, also in London.

Galleon Ent. Greenlights Animated Apollo's Pad

U.K.-based Galleon Ent. has greenlit production of the first TV series of its all-new animated property APOLLO'S PAD. APOLLO'S PAD (26x5), produced in association with Sony BMG, takes classic music tracks and by adding humor and animation to reach a new target audience for animation of young people, 16-24.

Warner to Launch Comedybox

Warner Music Ent., the video content wing of Warner Music Int'l, will launch the online comedy channel, Comedybox, this fall, according to VARIETY. The net network will feature weekly programs, one-off sketches, animation and user-generated content.

John Lloyd (BLACKADDER) is co-producer and Dan Schreiber is head of development.

Sony Music and Nickelodeon Partner for TV, Music Ventures

Nickelodeon, the number-one entertainment brand for kids owned by Viacom, Sony Music Label Group and Sony BMG Commercial Music Group announced a global partnership today for co-developing and co-financing a range of television and music projects over a four-year period. The deal calls for developing and producing projects such as original movies and television series to be aired on Nickelodeon, and multiple record releases, with potential to unlock additional business opportunities in consumer products.

New York-based Big Tent Ent. announced a broadcasting agreement with Nicktoons Network based on Big Tent's hit property THE STAR GIRLS. Nicktoons Network will debut PLANET GROOVE FEATURING THE STAR GIRLS, a new series of 13x2 minute animated music videos based on the original music from Australia's chart-topping group.

Visual Music Marathon 2007

Northeastern University is hosting the 2007 Visual Music Marathon, to be held as part of the Boston Cyberarts Festival. The marathon will include screenings of new and historic works that reflect the theme of the event and a live video component. Approximately 30 minutes of programming will be selected for national cablecast on the Harmony Channel, available to subscribers of digital cable on the Comcast and Cox networks.

Optronica 2007

PlayStation teams up with the BFI and leading audiovisual artists/producers Addictive TV with new-media curators Cinefeel to present Optronica, a hybrid of music festival and film festival taking place over five days in March 2007. Optronica explores the fusion of music and visuals, and features live audiovisual performances, screenings, talks, workshops and related special events. The festival will be held at the BFI IMAX and the newly renovated National Film Theatre, which will re-open as BFI Southbank on 1 February.

The seventh annual DIY Convention: Do It Yourself In Film, Music and Books features live music performances, special showcases, film screenings, parties and an extensive lineup of panels and keynote speakers focusing on creating, promoting, protecting and distributing independent film, music, books and other digital media.

This year, the event is producing several special lunchtime showcases in conjunction Bug Music and CDBaby. DIY Music Festival entrants and special guests will be featured at the events, which are open to DIY Convention VIP ticket holders.

TV Toon Composer Harvey R. Cohen Dies

Emmy-winning composer and arranger Harvey R. Cohen passed away on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, after suffering a heart attack in his Agoura Hills, California, home, reports VARIETY. He was 55.

Cohen won two Emmys for his music for the animated series -- DISNEY'S ALADDIN in 1995 and THE ADVENTURES OF BATMAN AND ROBIN in 1996. He garnered three other Emmy nominations for animated series -- two for CASPER and the other for BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES. His fourth nomination was for music direction on a Patti LaBelle PBS special.

Joel Veitch Animates Christmas My Arse Viral Music Video

EMI Music UK record label, Liberty, teamed up with web animator Joel Veitch to create the animation for Ricky Tomlinson's Christmas release, CHRISTMAS MY ARSE. The viral marketing campaign has been posted on social networking site, YouTube, to build momentum in the lead up to Christmas.

Students To Create Virtual Band For Charity

An new project entitled, "Be The Band," has been launched this year. The project hopes to attract students from a range of disciplines from musicians to animators and create an online virtual band with a single to be released through napster.co.uk and HMV digital. Money will be raised for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy through the online sales of the single with a target of £1 million.

Tim Burton to Helm Killers’ Music Video

The Killers, the hot band from Las Vegas, has lured Tim Burton to direct his first music video for the new song, Bones, from the forthcoming album SAMS TOWN, IGN Music reports.

The bands L.A. concert in August has been filmed and Burton is working with animators in London. The band confirmed that the video would incorporate many of Burton's trademark styles, including models, mini-sets based on bygone Vegas landmarks and skeletons.

Moving Picture Co. is providing post work for the video.
