Max Steel Action Figure to be Paramount Film?

Paramount Pictures is teaming with producer Joe Roth to purchase the rights to Mattel toy Max Steel for a possible big screen adaptation, per VARIETY.

Paramount has its G.I. Joe film coming in a few weeks, and Mattel would like to breath new life into the action figure, which was introduced in the U.S. in 1999 and had an animated series from 2000-2002. He is far more popular in Latin America, where he's the top selling action figure. Mattel currently produces animated direct-to-DVD features for the region, created by Rainmaker Ent. in Vancouver.

Mystery Mattel Monster to Get Musical

Universal Pictures has purchased the rights to a secret Mattel toy for a live-action musical film, per VARIETY.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will produce with the HAIRSPRAY team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who are in talks to write the original score.

Mattel has not publicly disclosed even the name of the property, saying only that it "aspires to add a fresh twist to monster lore."

Stevenson to Helm Live-Action Masters of the Universe

KUNG FU PANDA co-director John Stevenson told AWN that he intends to follow-up his Oscar-nominated animated feature with a live-action version of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. Mattel Claims Ownership of MGA Bratz Doll

Mattel Inc., home to the Barbie doll, is now claiming that it owns MGA Ent. Inc.'s rival Bratz doll, part of a new legal fight over a toy that has stripped the toy giant of a chunk of anticipated Barbie sales, according to the WALL STREET JOURNAL.

In court papers filed in U.S. District Court, Central California, on Nov. 20, 2006, (obtained by the WALL STREET JOURNAL), Mattel claims ownership to the Bratz empire because its former employee, named Carter Bryant, conceived the doll while he worked as a Barbie designer.
