Marvel Profits Fall in 2009

What a difference a year makes. Marvel Entertainment posted a lower second-quarter profit as compared to one year ago, notes the HollywoodReporter But, the superhero machine did exceed Wall Street’s expectations.

It seems super powers are no match for a tough economic climate. Marvel posted a quarterly profit of $29M, down from $46M this quarter, one year ago. Also, Marvel’s revenue fell from $156.9M to $116.3M.

Natalie Portman Joins Thor Cast

Marvel Studios announced today that Academy Award nominated actress Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the studio's highly anticipated movie THOR. In the early "Thor" comics, Jane Foster was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film.

Marvel Ent.'s Stock Upgraded by J.P. Morgan

MARKETWATCH reports that analysts at J.P. Morgan raised their rating on Marvel Entertainment Inc. from neutral to "overweight."

The price target for the stock was hiked from $27 to $42, and analysts said in a note to clients that Marvel was their "top pick as we expect the company to continue to generate high margin revenue from exploitation of its library of characters and surprise the Street to the upside."
