Hitting theaters April 22, the 2D animated film tells the true story of German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon, who over 18 months, completed more than one thousand gouaches depicting the lives of her family, friends, and lovers, before her 1943 murder in Auschwitz.
Inspired by the cyclist Gino Bartali’s acts of bravery in saving Jewish lives during the Nazi occupation of Italy during World War II, the 2D animated film is set for release in early 2023.
The acclaimed writer-illustrator believes his magnum opus is best left as a book, despite renewed interest from Hollywood in adapting it.
