Lionsgate Feasts on The Hunger Games
Lionsgate has acquired worldwide distribution rights to the film version of Suzanne Collins' best selling futuristic young adult novel THE HUNGER GAMES. Collins will adapt the screenplay from her novel, the first in a trilogy.
Nina Jacobson is producing through her Color Force shingle.
THE HUNGER GAMES was published by Scholastic last year. The trilogy's second installment, CATCHING FIRE, is due out September 1, 2009.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has acquired Snowblind Studios, an award winning, independent game development studio specializing in action and fantasy-based games.
Located outside of Seattle in Bothell, Washington, Snowblind Studios is known for the popular action role-playing games, BALDUR’S GATE: DARK ALLIANCE, CHAMPIONS OF NORRATH and JUSTICE LEAGUE HEROES. The studio was founded in 1997.
2009 GDC Choice Awards Name Special Winners, Host

Nintendo President to Keynote 2009 GDC
Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo Co., Ltd. will deliver a keynote address at the 2009 Game Developers Conference, kicking-off the main conference's schedule of lectures, panel discussions and roundtables that provide the central forum for learning, inspiration, and networking in the games industry. The address, "Discovering New Development Opportunities" marks Iwata-san's first return to the GDC keynote stage since 2006. The Game Developers Conference takes place March 23-27 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.
Capcom Signs Development Deal With Monumental Games
Videogame developer and publisher Capcom has signed a development agreement with U.K.-based Monumental Games. Under the terms of the agreement Monumental Games will develop an as yet unannounced multi-platform title scheduled for release and published by Capcom later this year.
Monumental Games was founded in 2005 by Rik Alexander and Rocco Loscalzo and has two U.K. offices in Nottingham and Manchester as well as an operation in Pune, India and currently employs more than 100 people.

Midway to Cut 180 Staffers, Close Austin Studio
Midway Games has to lay off 25 percent of its staff and has canceled several projects in early development in order to cut costs as a $150 million debt payment looms, reports VARIETY.
The January deadline for Midway's outstanding notes was triggered when Sumner Redstone sold the videogame publisher to a private investor, Mark Thomas, several weeks ago. Midway is working with advisory firm Lazard to find a way to pay off or renegotiate debt, as it is lacking the cash to pay it off.
Rockstar Big Winner at Spike TV's Video Game Awards
Sunday night at Sony Picture Studios in Culver City, California, everyone partied like a "rock star" as winners were announced for Spike TV's 2008 Video Game Awards. Hosted by Jack Black, the sixth annual event gathered the world of entertainment to recognize the outstanding artistic and technical achievement in the gaming industry over the past year.
Bruce Shelley Inducted Into Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame
Bruce Shelley will be the 12th inductee into The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame. Shelley is a preeminent game designer, who assisted Sid Meier in bringing the award-winning CIVILIZATION and RAILROAD TYCOON to the world, and later the AGE OF EMPIRES strategy games with Ensemble Studios.
PC GAMER named Shelley one of the 25 Game Gods in 1999, and in 2002 GAME SPY named him the eighth most influential person in gaming.

EA Acquires Korean Online Game Developer J2M
Electronic Arts has purchased J2MSoft, a Korean developer of PC online games. J2M develops free-to-play online games that are monetized through micro-transactions and advertising. Online games created and wholly owned by J2M include RAYCITY, TAAN, and DEBUT, and other properties to be announced.

National Geographic Launching Games Division
After several years of casual game creation, National Geographic is creating a full games division, per VARIETY.
National Geographic Games will operate under the company's extended platforms group, led by SVP Paul Levine. The unit will develop and publish games across the major consoles, online and mobile platforms.
National Geographic also announced a new virtual pet simulation game title called NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PANDA, developed and published by Namco Bandai.
