Hellboy Recruits A Golden Army To Win Box Office

Universal's HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY won its opening weekend (ending July 13) with $34.54 million (actuals). The Guillermo del Toro-directed comic book adaptation had vfx by Double Negative, FB-FX, Filmefex Studio, Ghost ApS, Hatch Production, Lip Synch Post and The Senate Visual Effects.

HANCOCK, last week's winner, dropped to the number two slot with $32.08M and a two-week $164.42M gross. The Sony film's vfx were by Furious FX, Lidar Services, Sony Pictures Imageworks and X1fx.

Mike Fink Joins Prime Focus Group

Prime Focus Group and Frantic Films announced that Michael L. Fink has been appointed President, Visual Effects Worldwide and will be operating out of the Frantic Films VFX facility located in Hollywood, California.

In his new role, Fink will be serving as Senior VFX Supervisor for projects awarded to Frantic Films VFX, and will be overseeing the integration of visual effects production for all of the Prime Focus Group VFX facilities across North America, India and the U.K., including London-based vfx facility Machine.

An Israeli And A Lebanese Win Big At Bitfilm Festival

The Internet audience has made its decision after two months, and the Bitfilm Festival Awards are official. Ninety-one films from 25 countries competed for Bitfilm Awards in six categories. More than 130,000 people from 146 countries visited the Bitfilm Festival online.

Frantic Films Embarks On A Journey To The Center Of The Earth

Award-winning VFX studio Frantic Films VFX, a division of Prime Focus Group, recently served as a lead visual effects provider for the forthcoming stereoscopic feature film, JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, produced by Walden Media and New Line Cinema. Based on the Jules Verne classic of the same name, the movie is directed by Academy Award-winning vfx veteran Eric Brevig. The 3-D film is slated for U.S. release on July 11, 2008.

Ideally we are looking animated films that run 30 seconds to one minute long, not including credits. Films should be available in HD. The pre-show entertainment program is designed to show animated films between ads and sponsors in the pre-show videos shown in theaters, film festivals, and other entertainment venues.

FX Ponies Up $47M For Five Fox Films

FX will pay around $47 million for five recent theatrical releases from 20th Century Fox, including DR. SEUSS' HORTON HEARS A WHO! and JUMPER, per VARIETY.

The other titles are WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS, 27 DRESSES and MEET THE SPARTANS. FX and Fox declined VARIETY's request for comment.

FX has a four-year license term on the package, getting 27 DRESSES and SPARTANS in mid-2010, JUMPER in fall 2010 and HORTON and VEGAS by November of that year.

Bitfilm Voting Close To The Finals

For one more week, the worldwide online community has the chance to cast their votes to decide upon the winners of the Bitfilm Festival. The online voting runs until July 1, 2008 at www.bitfilm.com/festival. 91 films compete in six categories for the Bitfilm Awards. On July 9 the winners will be disclosed at the Bitfilm Award Show held at Planetarium Hamburg. The prize money, donated by the Hamburg Cultural Authority, totals 10,000 Euros.

IndiePix, the Internet-based distributor of independent films, has launched IndiePix Studios, the world's first online studio for independent filmmakers. Indiepixstudios.com will provide an online virtual studio which will enable independent filmmakers to submit their films for distribution via Indiepixfilms.com.

In addition, filmmakers will be able to monitor sales and accounting statements, review contracts, network with other filmmakers from around the world, and review news and information concerning independent film.

Hey! 9 Story And Darius Films? Fugget About It!

Toronto-based production and distribution studio 9 Story Ent. and Canadian film producer Darius Films are partnering to produce a pilot entitled FUGGET ABOUT IT, a prime-time animated sitcom about the misadventures of a powerful former New York mob boss and his family, who enter a witness protection program and are relocated to a sleepy Canadian town.

The pilot has been commissioned for The Detour on Teletoon, the network's teen and adult programming block.

Holland Animation Film Festival 2008

The Holland Animation Film Festival organizes three different competitions. For each competition is a separate entry form available on the site. Fifty-two animated independent short films compete in the competition for independent animation. Deadline for entries is July 15, 2008. Nu Image/Millennium Films Acquires Buck Rogers

Nu Image/Millennium Films has picked up the film rights to BUCK ROGERS, reports VARIETY. Company head Avi Lerner acquired the rights from Dille Trust, which is operated by the family of BUCK creator Frank Dille. Originally, Disney held the rights to the property, but the Dille family wanted to license the property to a smaller company where they could have more say in the film's production.

After Dark To Produce Films for Its Horrorfest

After Dark Films has announced that it will produce two horror flicks for its next 8 Films to Die For Horrorfest theatrical series, reports VARIETY. FAITHLESS and PERKINS' 14 will be the first films the genre company has produced its own original content for its yearly fest.

Filming on both films will start in May in Romania.

Ottawa Festival Entry Deadline Fast Approaching

The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) entry deadline is fast approaching for the 2008 event taking place Sept. 17-21, 2008. Each year, by the June 1 deadline, the OIAF receives over 2,000 entries. Only 100 are selected to be screened. Animators are invited to submit their recent work in six major categories including independent short films, feature films, new media, commissioned films (TV series, commercials, music video etc), student films and work made for children. There is no entry fee. Preview DVDs must be received by June 16.
