American Animation Institute Summer Semester

The American Animation Institute's summer semester will run from June 2 to August 30. Registration for Animation Guild members begins May 8; registration for non-members begins May 12.

The American Animation Institute was founded in 1980 by the Animation Guild and Affiliated Optical Electronic and Graphic Arts, Local 839 IATSE, to further the art of the animated cartoon in the United States through educational and other activities.

Drawing and Thinking with Koji Yamamura

"Many people ask me whether I use 3D techniques." The filmmaker gave a half-grin. "The answer is no. The way I get the 3D effect is that I draw a shade drawing at the same time as the normal drawing." As one of the festival judges, filmmaker Koji Yamamura (Mt. Head, Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor) presented a lecture on his working methodologies. He also had an extensive graphic art show and a retrospective of his films.

Mainly drawing directly on paper with a myriad of colored pencils, Koji scans the artwork and arranges the layers -- sometimes 10-20 -- using Japanese animation software....

Cartoons on the Bay Announces 2007 Pulcinella Nominees

The complete list of programs officially selected for Cartoons on the Bay 2007, the international showcase of the year's best productions for television animation, have been announced.

The selection includes 162 programs from 19 countries (13 countries were represented in 2006) and will be on display in the digital video library for artists and professional in the industry, buyers, distributors, multimedia publishers and journalists.

Museum Drawing Workshop with Joe Weatherly

Joe Weatherly will conduct a Museum Drawing Workshop at the Natural History Museum with an emphasis on animal skeletal structure. This workshop will explore a variety of prehistoric mammal and reptile skeletons along with drawing from wild animal dioramas. The emphasis is on skeletal gesture and simplified bone construction to further ones knowledge of drawing live animals at the zoo. The event will take place from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Animal Drawing Classes

Joe Weatherly will be hosting two events in September at the Entertainment Art Academy on drawing animal anatomy. The first, "Animal Drawing Analysis," Sept 17, (11:00 am-2:00 pm) will focus on learning how to draw animals by using solid drawing principles such as understanding action, form analysis, construction, expressive drawing and simplified anatomy. This workshop is geared toward all levels of artists that want to learn how to approach animal drawing or take their current knowledge to the next level. Cost is $50.

DFN Gallery presents Rick Finkelsteins exhibition of large-scale charcoal and pastel drawings and his animated short film, WITHOUT WINGS. This film explores the relationship between the artists need to create, the process of creation and the need to revisit past traumatic experiences. Once a drawing is completed, it is photographed and then reworked, with no trace of the original drawing except the filmed record.
