Game Developers Choice Noms Announced

The recipients will be announced at a ceremony on March 6, 2003, during the Game Developers Conference (GDC), March 4-8 in San Jose, Calif. Produced by the Gama Network, the GDC is the largest annual event exclusively for game development professionals. Nominations were free and open to all professional game developers, regardless of membership or affiliation, so that nominees reflect the international development community's opinions.

Dosch Design Releases Two Libraries Of High Dynamic Range Images

Dosch Design has released the first two titles of its newly created product line, Dosch HDRI (High Dynamic Range Images). Both Dosch HDRI: Nature and Dosch HDRI: Skies contains 56 HDR-images, which are presented on three CDs. The new product line offers the user a comprehensive library of HDRI effects for use in 3D design and animation applications. Eliminating the need for manual definition of multiple light-sources and lengthy experimentation with color choice and light-volume, the HDRIs contain information as to whether there is a direct light-source (e.g.

The Big 3D contest is the first of its kind to focus on 3D design for the Web, bringing together the 3D and Web development communities to showcase the possibilities in this new arena of Web design. The contest will distribute over $15,000 in prizes, including full copies of SOFTIMAGE|XSI, NewTek Lightwave3D, Toon Boom Studio, MindAvenue AXELedge, Electric Rain Swift 3D, Anark Studio, Ideaworks3D Optimaze!, Strata 3D Pro, and FlashForward 2003 conference pass.

HOW Interactive Design Competition

HOW magazine invites you to enter the 4th annual HOW Interactive Design competition. The categories include DVDs, kiosks, CD-ROMs, Web sites and -- new this year -- motion design. All winning work will be featured in the August 2003 Interactive Design issue of HOW. Plus, one Best of Show winner will receive a $1,000 gift voucher from outpost.com, and 10 Outstanding Achievement winners will each receive $100 gift vouchers.

V-12 Commercials Expands, Signs Director Linzi Knight

Based on the success of live-action spots for AT&T, Verizon, PBS and others, Studio V-12 has recently launched a separate commercial division to handle the growing workload. Continuing its expansion, V-12 announces the addition of director Linzi Knight. Knight joins the current V-12 roster of Juan Delcan, V-12 Co-Founder David Hwang and Daryl Goodrich. After training in Toronto as a graphic designer, Knight spent five years pursuing design opportunities in Europe where she worked in top European design firms like Grapus in Paris and Meta Design in Berlin.

Humunculus Spotted In Venice

Broadcast design industry veteran Saam Gabbay has launched Humunculus, a new broadcast design and animation company in Venice, California. Humunculus provides audiovisual content for television networks, ad agencies, entertainment companies and major corporations. A 1992 graduate of UC Santa Barbara, Saam taught courses at UCSB on Adobe Photoshop and Premiere and helped to create the university's digital media lab.

Phactory Productions And Ultraviolet Merge

New York-based 3D design and animation company Phactory Productions, Inc., has merged with broadcast design studio Ultraviolet to create UV Phactory. The newly formed creative solutions studio offers 2D and 3D design and animation, live-action production and strategic design solutions for advertising agencies and the broadcast and cable communities. The company has already begun work on a host of jobs including projects for Miramax, HBO, TBS and The Sci-Fi Channel. UV Phactory will operate under the management team of Scott Sindorf, Damijan Saccio and Jeff Linnell.

Lisa Cleff Joins Goodspot As VP Of Sales And Marketing

Goodspot Design and Goodspot Editorial has appointed Lisa Cleff to the position of vice president of sales and marketing for both divisions. Cleff joins newly appointed executive producer Mandy Martin, with whom she enjoyed a successful working relationship during their time together at design studio Attik/San Francisco. Prior to joining Goodspot, Cleff served as director of sales and marketing for R!OT Design in Manhattan. Her entree into the world of broadcast design came during her three years as U.S. director of business development at Attik.

The Art Institute Online To Offer Game Art & Design

The Art Institute Online, a division of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, will offer a bachelor of science in Game Art & Design beginning in fall 2002. The Art Institute Online currently offers programs in graphic design and multimedia and Web design in an interactive, faculty-facilitated, asynchronous format that allows students to log in to complete their classes 24 hours a day, seven days a week at their convenience, making it ideal for students with irregular schedules or those who live in areas far from a brick-and-mortar school.

Visual effects artist Kate ONeill has joined the creative team of New York-based animation, visual effects and design company Black Logic. "Kate had been freelancing for us for quite a while, and we were attracted to the ease with which she approaches her work," said executive producer Ivan Molomut. "Kate's talent and personality is a perfect fit for the effects/CGI team we have assembled and our clients love working with her." ONeill has been freelancing as a Flame/Inferno artist since 1995.

B1 Media Leaps To Larger Studio, Expands Talent Base

Design studio B1 Media has moved its headquarters to a new facility in Studio City, California, more than doubling the size of its previous space, and has added several new staffers to its growing talent base. Previously partnered in multimedia company Barbed Wire, Joshua Hatton has moved to B1 as an animator involved in 2D and 3D animation and motion graphics working on DVD, broadcast design and games. Game producer Jason Friedlander joins B1 from MTV's ROAD RULES where he was responsible for developing and writing game competitions.

The Osbournes Get The Klasky Csupo Treatment

The New York Times calls it "an odd amalgam of OZZIE AND HARRIET, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES and THIS IS SPINAL TAP," and after being on air less than a month it's MTV's biggest hit in over two decades. It can only be THE OSBOURNES, the reality sitcom about former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne and his family. To create the introductory graphics for the series starring the self-proclaimed Prince of Darkness, THE OSBOURNES executive producers called on the new broadcast design division of Klasky Csupo.

R!OT Design Ups Jeremy Hollister

R!OT Design has appointed Jeremy Hollister to the post of creative director of broadcast design. Hollister will provide creative supervision for all design-related projects undertaken by the studio. An influential member of R!OT's design team since 1996, Hollister has won numerous Promax and BDA awards, as well as other design industry honors for his work for the Sci Fi Channel, ESPN, MTV and other accounts. Most recently he has been signed by London-based production company SKUNK for worldwide representation in commercial and music video direction.

Visual effects, broadcast design and animation studio Click 3x has brought on Jim Collins to head the studios animation department. Formerly with the design boutique TZ, Collins has experience in animation, illustration and compositing, and has credits across a variety of media. His experience is particularly strong in broadcast graphics, having recently completed projects for NBC, CBS News, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox, ESPN, Sci Fi Channel and CNNSI. He also has numerous credits in commercials.

R!OT Manhattan Grows With New Broadcast Design Hires

As a first step in the companys plan to expand their broadcast design department, R!OT Manhattan has hired Sari Rosen to serve as the broadcast design groups executive producer. Rosen, an Emmy-winner and former executive producer at Attik and Pittard Sullivan, will manage and grow the departments creative team and take a leadership role with client relationships and development. Rosen joins R!OT Manhattan from Attik, where she had served as executive producer of its New York office since last year.

B1 Media Launches Games Division

Los Angeles-based design studio B1 Media has launched a games division, B1/Games, and hopes to develop products for set-top game consoles. B1 Media has primarily been a provider of interactive design for DVDs and has created games and interactive content for numerous DVD titles like DINOSAUR, UNBREAKABLE, THE SIXTH SENSE and PLANET OF THE APES. The company also recently launched a broadcast design division, B1/Broadcast.
