Design Festa vol.23

Design Festa started in 1994, and is a freestyle International Art Event open to artists from all over the world to exhibit their creative talent. Design Festa is the biggest art event in Asia! The event features a wide diversity of creative work, including painting, sculpture, fashion and installations, as well as multimedia, film-screening, live music, and performance art. Design Festa is held twice a year in spring and fall at Tokyo Big Sight.

The MacGathering

The MacGathering is now in its 3rd year and this year introduces the SoHo Tech Show. The event is designed with the self-employed, small business and design community in mind. Classes cover website, photo, animation, QTVR, a very rare audio recording seminar and other pro-level audio classes, audio for all, podcasting, wi-fi, wireless, Mac troubleshooting, word processing, intellectual property, accounting, database design. The exhibit hall has a variety of products, many new ones, some debuts.

ASIFA-East Fest Announces Awards

The New York chapter of ASIFA, the International Animated Film Society gave out its 37th annual awards in a ceremony held in the downtown Manhattan auditorium of the New School/Parsons School of Design on mM

The winners were selected from submitted films voted on by chapter members at a series of screenings. Twenty-seven awards were given out in four categories: Student Films, Commercials, Sponsored Films Over 2:00 and Independent Films. In addition to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, craft awards were given out for achievements in design, animation, humor and education.

Concept Designers James Clyne and Neville Page Join Gnomon

Concept design luminaries James Clyne and Neville Page will be teaching two new courses at Gnomon School of Visual Effects during the spring 2006 term, which begins April 3. Clyne has developed and will teach Environment Workflow Techniques, while Pages course is Character Workflow Techniques. Both courses are five weeks in length.

MirrorMask Dazzles on DVD

The Jim Henson Co.s underrated fantasy, MIRRORMASK, featuring the directorial debut of illustrator Dave McKean, makes its way to DVD (Sony Pictures Home Ent., $26.96). Full of evocative imagery set against the backdrop of the kingdom of the Dark Lands, MIRRORMASK utilized a crew of 15 CG artists hired straight out of Bournemouth University and supervised by CG producer Max McMullin, who has worked on all of McKeans shorts. MoCap was done at Artem Digital.

Big Machine Titles X-Testers For The Learning Channel

Big Machine Design (BMD) has produced a new main title opening sequence and show graphics package for the TV program X-TESTERS, which airs on The Learning Channel. For X-TESTERS, BMD produced a main title opening sequence combining graphics and live action. BMDs client for the program was Lee Toft, post supervisor at Mike Mathis Prods.

Gnomon Workshop Releases Five New Analog Training DVDs

The Gnomon Workshop and Design Studio Press have released five new training DVDs, three from veteran Scott Robertson, and the first two from the concept designer known as Puddnhead.

Robertson offers a three-volume series on rendering matte surfaces. The titles cover shading planar, round and complex curved surfaces. While he uses analog tools, such as charcoal and pencil, the skills are vital for anyone interested in foundation lighting concepts.

AI of LA Offers Scholarships for High School Seniors

The Art Institute of California Los Angeles invites high school seniors interested in the fields of applied arts and design to apply for tuition scholarships in its 2006 Scholarship Competition. The competition is open to all students who are scheduled to graduate in 2006 from a U.S. high school or equivalent foreign institution.

Scholarships are available for new students pursuing degrees in Graphic Design, Media Arts & Animation, Game Art & Design, Interior Design, Interactive Media Design and Video Production.

Autodesk to Acquire Alias

Autodesk Inc. announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Alias for $182 million in cash. This acquisition will grow Autodesk's expertise and offerings for the design of consumer products and automotive, as well as in the media and entertainment markets. The merger brings the chief 3D software applications 3ds Max and Maya under one roof. Autodesk anticipates that the transaction will close within the next four to six months.

Design Studios Set to Open National School of Animation

Design Studios, a training, production, and research-based animation studio, is in negotiations with the state government in Hyderabad to open a National School of Animation (NSA), according to CYBER INDIA ONLINE. If approved, the academy would be one of the largest animation houses in Asia. Besides the government, Design Studios is in talks with big companies to help fund the academy.
