S4 Studios Brands Chiller Channel for NBC Universal

Hollywood's S4 Studios has completed the on-air animated and live branding campaign for Chiller, NBC-Universal Cable Ent.'s new all-HD channel featuring 24-hour horror and thriller programming. The campaign is S4's latest major stride as it continues its emergence into a full-fledged design studio. Chiller, which launched March 1 on DirecTV, will be available as an HD simulcast channel (also with standard def), with video-on-demand and broadband-on-demand also available.

Roger Produces Show Package for Nick’s Me TV

Roger, a broadcast, advertising and design studio founded by creative directors Vasil Hnatiuk, Terence Lee and Mark Yamamoto, delivered the graphics package for Nickelodeons new ME TV programming block.

In addition, Roger is the recent recipient of the Newcomer of the Year Award presented at INSPIRE 07.

Academy Announces Scientific and Technical Achievements

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today (Jan. 4, 2007) announced the 15 winners of Scientific and Technical Academy Awards, which will be presented at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills on Saturday, Feb. 10.

AI of LA Adds Sustainable Packaging to Graphic Design Classes

"Sustainable Packaging" will become a major theme taught in Graphic Design classes at The Art Institute of California -- Los Angeles during the Winter Quarter 2007 starting Jan. 8, 2007, in Santa Monica, California.

Instructor Suzannah Mathur, who has a master's degree in Sustainable Product Design, will teach a class specifically on sustainable packaging to help make designers more knowledgeable about the choices they have. Mathur explains, "Packaging accounts for most of waste. [The content of a package] will break before its package does."

Look Effects Launches The Captain Design Division

Look Effects has expanded into graphic design with the recent unveiling of its new division, The Captain. The Captain offers TV, advertising and feature film client creative services that include the conception and production of main title sequences, show opens, logo design, film graphics and branding.

The Captain also achieved major client wins from HBO, Fox Sports and Dockers. Heading up the division are designer/director Mason Nicoll, exec producer Ellen Stafford and business development director Eric Todd Smith.

Humans Wins Global Student Animation Awards

STASH MAGAZINE has announced the winners of the 2006 Global Student Animation Awards. The three Category Winners and Best of 2006 were selected by an international panel of 16 judges from all parts of the animation, vfx and motion design industry.

The audience choice award is the result of more than 10,000 votes cast by online viewers of the 2006 semi-finalist films.

Newspeak Opens in NYC with mtvU & VH1 Projects

Newspeak has started up in New York City as a young design boutique specializing in motion design, art direction and identity development. Founded by Erik Montovano, its creative director, he is joined at Newspeak by Andreea Prichea as exec producer. The companys initial projects are a major show package for mtvU MTVs 24-hour college network, and show packages for three Vh1Classic series.

Dan May has been hired as president of Blackmagic Design Inc. May joins Blackmagic as the company begins the re-location of its U.S. corporate headquarters to Milpitas, California. All operations currently handled by the Las Vegas, Nevada, office will be transferred to the Milpitas office.
