Luxology has released a new 3DM file translator that allows modo users to exchange files with Rhinoceros (Rhino), the 3D design tool from Robert McNeel and Associates.

Co-Founder/EP Saffron Case and Co-Founder/Director Mikon van Gastel of New York-based production house A Very Small Office (AVSO) have opened design and animation company Offspring. Case and van Gastel, who have spent many years with both the Los Angeles and New York offices of Imaginary Forces are taking their vision and years of design-based production experience into a new realm.

Adobe Systems has announced the winners of the eighth annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards, recognized as one of the world's premier student design and film competitions.

The awards honor the most talented and promising student graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, animators, digital filmmakers and computer artists from renowned educational institutions around the globe. This year marked another record in submissions for the prestigious awards, with more than 2,700 students from 33 countries competing in the program.

The first extension release for Autodesk 3ds Max 2009 and Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2009 software is now available to Autodesk Subscription customers. The Creativity Extension includes new particle effects capabilities, designed to help artists increase the realism of their work. The extension will also allow artists, designers, and visualization specialists incorporate audio and sound effects into their animated scenes, and quickly optimize highly detailed 3D models from digital sculpting applications, such as Autodesk Mudbox software.

SIGGRAPH announces the return of the Artists in Residence program to SIGGARPH 2008, taking place August 11-15 in Los Angeles, California. This program was first introduced in 2007 and will feature six established resident artists -- with backgrounds ranging from art and computer design to architecture and engineering -- collaborating together and with conference attendees in real time.

In a dynamic change to the format of the traditional SIGGRAPH Art Gallery, this year's art and design program will represent innovative juried and curated installations across two complementary themes -- Slow Art and Design & Computation.

Pixar's anticipated hit movie, WALL-E, whose main character is the last robot on Earth, was inspired by Luxo's iconic L-1 task light.

In a recent interview, Wall-E director Andrew Stanton, who also directed Pixar's Academy-Award winning FINDING NEMO, noted that the combination of the L-1 and a pair of binoculars served as an inspiration for WALL-E. "Luxo was always an inspiration because of all the life it gave an inanimate object," Stanton said.
