Universal And Dark Horse Sign Deal

Universal Pictures and indie comic book company Dark Horse Entertainment have signed a worldwide production and distribution agreement, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Universal is now the studio home of Dark Horse, which is one of the largest comic book companies outside of Marvel and DC.

It has access to all Dark Horse characters, properties and any material Dark Horse acquires on its own.

In return, Dark Horse projects have financial backing and a distribution entity.

Dark Oz Optioned For Screen Trilogy

Macabre comic series DARK OZ was optioned for film and TV by hip-hop artist Pras Michel (The Fugees) over the weekend, VARIETY reports.

DARK OZ was originally published by Caliber Comics and follows an older Dorothy as she travels through Oz, with many of the same characters from the original Frank L. Baum novel and 1939 film starring Judy Garland.

The screenplay was adapted from the original comic creators Aaron Denenberg, Ralph Griffith and Stuart Kerr; production is slated to begin late 2008.

Video Director Near Helming Dark Remake

Sam Bayer, a video director who helmed the clips for Nirvana's SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT and Justin Timberlake's WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND, is in talks to direct a remake of the vampire flick NEAR DARK, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Platinum Dunes will produce the film for Rogue Pictures.

Based on the 1987 original, which was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the redux follows a young Southern man who falls for a pretty female vampire, who turns him into one of her gang of murderous bloodsuckers. DISTURBIA scribe Christopher Landon is penning the adaptation.

TOKYOPOP & Jim Henson Co. To Release Dark Crystal Graphic Novel

TOKYOPOP and The Jim Henson Co. have announced LEGENDS OF THE DARK CRYSTAL: THE GARTHIM WARS, the all-new manga prequel to THE DARK CRYSTAL. The graphic novel was written by Barbara Randall Kesel, with illustrations by Heidi Arnhold & Max Kim and a special cover painted by Jae-Hwan Kim (WARCRAFT, WAR ANGELS, KING OF HELL).

Dark Horse Traps War Monkeys

Dark Horse Indie has tapped Cleve Nettles to pen the script for WAR MONKEYS, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Mike Richardson is exec producing.

Based on a story by producer Chris Patton, the horror comedy finds a janitor locked in an underground military research lab with assassin Rhesus monkeys.

Nettles is the associate producer of Imagi Ent.'s CAT TALE.

Dark Horse Acquires Gantz Manga

Dark Horse has acquired the enormously popular seinen manga series, GANTZ. Hiroya Oku, creator of GANTZ, has put together a cast of characters that are both sympathetic and strong in a hardboiled universe of ultra-stylish violence, pathos and sexiness. The wildly renowned anime, also entitled GANTZ from ADV, primarily follows the same story and has been translated in several different languages.

Dark Is Rising Adds The Seeker to Title

THE DARK IS RISING, the name of the movie from Fox Walden based on the second of Susan Cooper's five fantasy books is now titled, THE SEEKER: THE DARK IS RISING.

Writer John Hodge (TRAINSPOTTING) is doing the adaptation, the director is David L. Cunningham (THE PATH TO 9/11) and Marc Platt is producer. The Fox Filmed Ent. feature opens Oct. 5, 2007.

Mattel Snatches Global Toy Licensee for Speed Racer & The Dark Knight

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) announced that it has named Mattel Inc. as the global master toy licensee for both SPEED RACER and THE DARK KNIGHT, two of the biggest summer films coming out in 2008. Mattel will apply its expertise across virtually all product lines including vehicles, action figures, action play, remote control vehicles, handheld electronics as well as games and puzzles.

Dark Castle, Warner Premiere Pact on Direct-to-DVDs

Joel Silver's Dark Castle Ent. has inked a deal with Warner Premiere to produce two to three direct-to-DVD films per year, reports VARIETY. The horror film, RETURN TO HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, will be the first project under the new pact.

Additionally, Dark Castle plans to create original digital content to be distributed on the Internet and mobile devices. The shorts will support the direct-to-DVD releases or otherwise work to expand the Dark Castle label.

Dark Castle's DTD titles will not only be horror films, but also action flicks and thrillers.

Dark Horse's Ark Sets Sail at Columbia

Columbia Pictures has obtained the film rights to the Dark Horse Comics graphic novel THE ARK, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Original Film's Neal Moritz will produce alongside Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson. Comic creator Mark Verheiden will pen the screenplay. Debuting as part of the Dark Horse Presents anthology series in 1998, the series retells the Biblical account of Noah's ark combining it with UFOs.

Hossein Amini (THE WINGS OF THE DOVE) has been hired to adapt THE SUBTLE KNIFE, the second book in Phillip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS series, according to VARIETY. Chris Weitz is in production on the $150 million adaptation of the first book, THE GOLDEN COMPASS, which is set to hit theaters in time for the holidays.

Spirit of Will Eisner Lives on at 2005 Eisner Awards

The 17th Annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards were bestowed on Friday, July 15, 2005, in a gala ceremony in the ballroom at the San Diego Convention Center. The awards event was dedicated to Eisner, who died in January. His presence was felt throughout the evening, as presenter after presenter shared thoughts about the late comics giant. The ceremony was preceded by a slide show of Eisners career and a video with taped tributes from many creators who couldnt attend, including Frank Miller, Mike Mignola and Dave Sim.

Dark Water Moved Up One Month

Touchstone Pictures' psychological thriller, DARK WATER, will now open on July 8, 2005, one month ahead of its previously scheduled release date. The film, starring Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Connelly, and helmed by acclaimed director Walter Salles (THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES), is produced by Bill Mechanic, Roy Lee and Doug Davison. Kids’ WB! Brings on The Batman

DC Rules at the Eisner Awards

DC Comics ruled the 16th annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, with projects and creators from DC titles involved in half of the award winners. The gala ceremony was held on July 23, 2004, in the Ballroom at the San Diego Convention Center. Dark Horse took home four Eisners. The only other publisher with multiple Eisners was Top Shelf.
