Stan Lee: A Retrospective

The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) will host "Stan Lee: A Retrospective" exhibition honoring the famed comics creator and industry pioneer. The exhibition is sponsored in part by Reed Exhibitions and scheduled to open at the MoCCA on Feb. 23, 2007, to coincide with Stan Lee's scheduled appearance as a special guest at Reed's New York Comic-Con (www.newyorkcomic-con.com) being held at the Javits Convention Center that weekend.

Cartoon Art Museum November Cartoonist-in-Residence: Gene Yang

The Cartoon Art Museum will host cartoonist Gene Yang from 1:00 to 3:00 pm as part of its ongoing Cartoonist-in-Residence program. Museum visitors will have a chance to watch Yang at work and chat with him about cartooning.

Yang was born in 1973 in Alameda, California. He began drawing comics in the fifth grade. In 1997, Gene received the Xeric Grant for GORDON YAMAMOTO AND THE KING OF THE GEEKS, his first comics work as an adult.

Virgin Comics Sets Up Animation Shop In Bangalore

Virgin Comics has set up an animation studio in Bangalore where artists work on themes with a strong eastern influence. Reports NDTVPROFIT.COM.

"Bangalore is the true R&D centre for Virgin animation," said Suresh Seetharaman, president, Virgin Comics & Virgin Animation. "It creates all the content, be it art, content and works with a complete network of people abroad who help us put it all together."

Intensive One-Week Comics Writing Course

Longtime SPIDER-MAN editor and Marvel Comics writer Danny Fingeroth, co-author of the upcoming HOW TO CREATE COMICS FROM SCRIPT TO PRINT, will be teaching an intensive one-week comics and graphic novel writing course.

DC Comics, Warner Home Video (WHV) and Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) announced the start of production and distribution of DC Universe, a series of original, animated PG-13 movies. The slate features two to three action-packed films per year.

Del Toro Brings Life to DC’s Deadman

Guillermo del Toro is in talks to partner with Don Murphy's Angry Films to bring cult DC Comics DEADMAN to the big screen for Warner Bros. Pictures, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Del Toro will develop comics-to-film adaptation with Murphy and Susan Montford.

Middle Eastern Superheroes Coming To Comic-Con

AK Comics Jalila, Rakan, Zein and Aya hit Comic-Con via newly published U.S. issues featuring AKs roster of caped Middle Eastern superheroes.

From a booth, attendees will be introduced to pages of four U.S. titles featuring the visually striking superheroes, as well the creative team bringing them to life. The L.A.- and Cairo-based company also will assemble artists, writers and editors for a panel to be presented 10:30 am in Room 8 on Thursday, July 20, 2006.

Fledgling publisher Crazee Comics, known for titles like COSMICWARS and RUSS5377, is heading to Licensing Intl to promote its products.

With the successful launch of its weekly podcast show CATCH DA CRAZE PODCAST AUDIO MIX and appearances on UPN, radio & public television and numerous critic reviews, the publisher is now ready to test their products marketability.

For the show, Crazee Comics has produced a Flash animated trailer of THERE'S AN ALIEN IN MY TOILET and some prototype latex models of the main character Doodie.

Alex Toth Dies at 77

Comicbook and animation maverick Alex Toth died May 27 at his drawing table at home in Burbank, reported THE L.A. TIMES. He was 77.

"For 50 years he did what he wanted to do smoke cigarettes, sit on the couch and draw," his daughter Dana Palmer said. "But in his final year there was such a great spirit in him, and he had made peace with everybody on Earth that he needed to make peace with."

Toth is best known for his character designs for such Hanna-Barbera productions as SUPERFRIENDS, SPACE GHOST and HERCULOIDS.

Larry Lieberman to Head Marketing for Virgin Comics/Virgin Animation

Larry Lieberman joins Virgin Comics Llc./Virgin Animation as chief marketing officer, to overseeing the company's U.S. operations, Global Licensing Business, Strategic Marketing, Publishing and Advertising Sales Divisions. Lieberman is also charged to grow the company's worldwide online and wireless content initiatives.

He will be based in New York City, working closely with Sharad Devarajan, ceo, Virgin Comics/Virgin Animation, to whom he reports.

Sgt. Rock Finds Writer

John Cox, who has projects in development at the USA Network and ESPN, has been tapped by by Joel Silver for Warner Bros. Pictures to write SGT. ROCK, an adaptation of DC Comics' World War II adventure comic, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Sgt. Frank Rock was the leader of his infantry unit called Easy Company. He first appeared in a 1959 issue of OUR ARMY AT WAR. As the characters popularity rose, the comic was renamed SGT. ROCK in 1977 and ran until 1988.

Comicbook Icon Jim Lee to Work On DC Universe MMO Game

DC Comics, Sony Online Ent. Inc. (SOE) and Warner Bros. Interactive Ent. (WBIE) announced plans to collaborate with legendary comicbook illustrator Jim Lee to work on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMO) based on the DC Comics universe.

SOE will be developing and publishing a game based on the DC Comics universe for next generation gaming platforms and the PC. It is expected that Lee will serve as exec creative director on the game, bringing his artistic flair and talents to the world of online gaming for the first time.

Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Books Ltd. announced a new entertainment partnership with world-renowned author Deepak Chopra, acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and South Asia's leading publisher of comic magazines, Gotham Ent. Cairo-Based Comic Book Creator/Publisher Opens L.A. Office

Cairo-based AK Comics has established a Los Angeles area office to promote in the U.S. market its line of Middle East-themed superhero comic books, animated series based on the comic titles and extensive licensing program surrounding the companys array of brands.

Jordan L. Udko will head the office in Santa Monica, California, as vp business development for AK Comics. Udko was a distribution account exec Paramount Pictures.

Spirit of Will Eisner Lives on at 2005 Eisner Awards

The 17th Annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards were bestowed on Friday, July 15, 2005, in a gala ceremony in the ballroom at the San Diego Convention Center. The awards event was dedicated to Eisner, who died in January. His presence was felt throughout the evening, as presenter after presenter shared thoughts about the late comics giant. The ceremony was preceded by a slide show of Eisners career and a video with taped tributes from many creators who couldnt attend, including Frank Miller, Mike Mignola and Dave Sim.
