Second Chapter Of Watchmen Motion Comics Now Available

At ComicCon, Warner Premiere and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution announced a new way for comic book fans to connect with their favorite characters and stories they know and love through short form digital content called Motion Comics. These draw on a deep reservoir of source material to bring a new visually engaging experience to life through the use of subtle movements, voice-overs, sweeping music scores and stunning comic book artwork.

The first Motion Comic to debut was WATCHMEN which was taken from the critically-acclaimed Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore graphic novel.

Framelight To Illuminate Graphic Novels, Comics

New filmmaking studio Framelight Productions is looking to add to the volume of comic book and graphic novel film adaptations, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Launched by producer Jeffrey Erb and entrepreneur Robert Robinson Jr., they have options on properties including Marvel Comics' DR. DETH WITH KIP AND MUFFY from G.I. JOE author Larry Hama. Framelight has plans to make six to eight films in the next five years, all within the $20 to $80 million range.

Virgin Comics Closes Doors

Just two years since the founding of Virgins Comics, the joint venture between Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group and Indian comics publisher Gotham Ent., the company has closed its doors and laid off its New York-based eight-member staff, per PUBLISHERS WEEKLY.

Attempts to confirm the closing with Virgin Comics CEO and co-founder and President of Gotham Ent. Sharad Deverajan were not successful, but sources tell PW the unit has been closed and an official statement is likely coming soon.

Family Guy Showrunner Gets Last Blood

David A. Goodman, showrunner and exec producer on FAMILY GUY, will write LAST BLOOD, a feature film from Benderspink from the Blatant Comics horror property, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

The comic, created by Bobby Crosby and Chris Crosby, is about a group of human survivors who escaped a zombie massacre, who are protected by a group of vampires who need their blood to survive.

Virgin Comics, Perspective Studios Introduce Grant Morrison's MBX At Comic-Con

Virgin Comics and Perspective Studios will collaborate with acclaimed comics scribe Grant Morrison on MBX, a new intellectual property and animation franchise based on India's iconic myth The Mahabharata.

Morrison's re-imagining of the epic tale of two families at war and the fate of the universe that hangs in the balance features an ancient world fused with incredible technology and super beings. At San Diego Comic-Con 2008, animation for the project will get its first public look.

TOKYOPOP And Gentosha Comics Ink Distribution And Development Deal

Global manga giants TOKYOPOP and Gentosha Comics have entered into a worldwide partnership to advance the cause of the manga revolution. Under the terms of the alliance, TOKYOPOP will provide sublicensing agency services (outside of Asia, France, and Italy) for Gentosha Comics's world-class library of manga hits, including titles like GRAVITATION, LAMENT OF THE LAMB, and ARM OF KANNON.

The companies will also pursue a wealth of co-development opportunities in the digital, film, and merchandising spaces.

WB Might Rethink DC Comics Strategy

Over the past few weeks, Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov and Warner Bros. Pictures president Kevin McCormick have been meeting with DC Comics executives and talent to discuss a new direction for their film adaptations, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

This regrouping is said to have been brought about by Marvel Studios' success with their films IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, and their plan to link the characters across the films in a strategic way. DC's comics at Warner Bros. are famously disorganized, a hodgepodge of developments.

This all-day event of lectures and panel discussions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City brings together leading international scholars, critics, and designers to discuss the world of costumes and comics, spurred by the museum's exhibit "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy," on display through September 1. Themes include the appropriation of the uniform, the adaptation of superhero costumes for the screen, the creation of modern mythologies, and the role of the superhero as metaphor in contemporary society.

DC Comics' Red Heads To Big Screen

Summit Ent. is venturing into the comic book adaptation arena with the acquisition of WildStorm/DC Comics' RED, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Brothers Erich and Jon Hoeber are penning the script for the action film, which will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and his longtime exec Mark Vahradian. This marks the first time a DC Comics title won't be produced by parent company Time Warner.

DC is however remaining active in this adaptation. DC SVP of Creative Affairs Gregory Noveck will serve as exec producer and will oversee RED.

Sci Fi/Virgin Comics Get Neighborly With The Superheroes And Spouses Of Superbia

Sci Fi/Virgin Comics, the year-old joint venture between Sci Fi Channel and Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Comics, announced today the imprint's second title, SUPERBIA.

Imagine if the members of the Justice League moved to Wisteria Lane with spouses in tow, and you get a hint of what life is like in Woodshire Village, a planned community for superheroes, their spouses, girlfriends and domestic partners. SUPERBIA is created and written by Lisa Klink and Jordan Gorfinkle. It is expected to be released this summer and is in development for a TV pilot.
