Walt Disney Co. to Acquire Indian Kids Channel & Invests in UTV

The Walt Disney Co. plans to acquire Hungama TV, a leading Indian children's television channel, and take an equity interest in media company UTV Software Communications Ltd. as the media giant strengthens its presence in a rapidly growing media market, where local content production is key. Both transactions are subject to certain conditions and regulatory approval.

Hungama TV coo Zarina Mehta will work with the Disney team on the organizational and operational integration of Hungama TV into Disney's portfolio of kids' channels.

Walt Doublestein has joined New York City- and Los Angeles-based Channel M as vp videogame integration.

For the past nine years, Doublestein worked at BBDO Detroit, where he was most recently director video gaming & non-traditional marketing. One of the pioneers in videogame integration, he oversaw projects, such as NASCAR 06 TOTAL TEAM CONTROL, TONY HAWKS UNDERGROUND 2, TONY HAWKS AMERICAN WASTELAND, THE MOVIES and TOMB RAIDER: LEGEND.

Navarre's FUNimation Channel Signs IPTV Distribution Agreement with Optical Ent.

FUNimation Ent. has finalized a distribution agreement with Optical Ent. Network (OEN), the leading provider of IPTV and broadband services optimized for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). FUNimation Channel becomes part of the FISION service, OEN's lineup of 400 IPTV channels available in the Houston area. The FUNimation Channel is a 24-hour digital channel featuring programming from top anime brands in the U.S. and will be added to OEN's FISION lineup in fall 2006.

HIT to Launch Euro Kids Network

HIT Ent. is set to launch a European kids channel within 18 months in a partnership with Hallmark Intl owners Sparrowhawk Media, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

CEO Bruce Steinberg, former ceo of channel group Fox Kids Europe, plans to leverage the brand internationally, but will not launch in the U.K., where he feels the market is overcrowded.

The new partnership will be similar to the broadcaster's U.S. channel Sprout, which it operates in partnership with PBS, Comcast and Sesame Workshop.

Convicted Sex Offender Arrested for Molestation on Nick Campus

Frederator Studios founder Fred Seibert has launched Channel Frederator, the world's first cartoon video podcast created expressly for distribution of world-class content on portable video devices, such as the Apple iPod and the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP).

Nicolas Cage Does Some Detective Work For SCI FI Channel

Academy Award-winner Nicolas Cage is set to exec produce THE DRESDEN FILES (working title) for SCI FI Channel. The 2-hour backdoor pilot Cage's first foray into television will be produced by Lions Gate Television, in association with Cage's Saturn Films (THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE, SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE). Production is slated to begin in Toronto this fall with plans for a summer 2006 premiere.

New FUNimation Channel Offers 24-hour Digital Anime Network

FUNimation Ent. a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navarre Corp., launched the FUNimation Channel today (Sept. 29, 2005), a 24-hour, digital network that will feature distinguished anime programming from FUNimation's anime brands. Working with OlympuSAT, one of the leading distributors for independent programming in the U.S., the channel will be available to video service providers throughout the nation. The plan is for the FUNimation Channel to be part of the basic and extended digital packages, so it will be a regular channel in the lineup.
