WIA Canada Host Bob Godfrey Q&A

Women In Animation Canada, in conjunction with VanArts, is hosting an interview with Academy Award-winning animation director Bob Godfrey, conducted by Bonita Versh from Klasky Csupo. Godfrey is well known for his amazing stories and will be talking about his life in animation, with a Q & A period to follow. The even will take place at The Hampton Inn - Belcarra Room, 111 Robson Street, Vancouver. The doors will open at 6:30 pm will the discussion beginning at 7:00 pm. The event is free to members and by donation to non-members (suggested $ 3). RSVP before July 15 to pakarnyk@akacartoon.com.

New Canadian Subsidy Directory Revised

The newly revised Canadian Subsidy Directory 2004 edition is now available, containing information to more than 2,000 direct and indirect subsidies, grants, and loans offered by various levels of government; foundation; association and other similar organizations in Canada.

Could prove good reading for companies interested in partnering with Canadian animation and vfx houses to help fund projects by taking advantage of the financial boost the entertainment and other industries get in Canada.

Canada Tops Cartoons On The Bay Winners

Cartoons on the Bay, the 8th festival of television animation organized by Rai Trade, culminated in Positano, Italy with the Pulcinella Awards on April 25, 2004. Canada led the awards with three.

The Government of Canada will be opening a new Embassy building in Berlin, Germany in 2004 and it is looking for films to play on three screens as visitors enter the building. Public access will be granted to the ground floor of the Embassy and people will be using a passageway through the Embassy building, called the "Northwest Passage." Part of the passage will be a set of three plasma screens, which will be used to promote an innovative and inspiring image of Canada.

NATPE News: NFB Brings Original Canadian Animation

The National Film Board of Canada will be at NATPE this year with NOËL NOËL, an animated Christmas special narrated by Leslie Nielsen, that revives the great tradition of children's fairy tales.

The title character in this whimsical half-hour is a misguided billionaire, who falls in love with Beatrice, a bespectacled fairy who prefers words of love to rivers of diamonds. Thanks to little Zoey, her dog Snooze and a blue-eyed reindeer, Noel Noël finally realizes that money doesn't bring happiness, and that to be happy, you have to listen to your heart.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut Comes to Comedy Central

Comedy Central plans to celebrate America's birthday on July 4, 2003 with a 1:00 am broadcast of SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT, uncensored by the cablenet with encore presentations July 5 and 6 at 1:00 am. The feature film based upon the hit series by Trey Parker and Matt Stone grossed more than $52 million in the U.S. and won both New York and L.A. Film Critics awards. It also received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, "Blame Canada."

HIT Entertainment Canada Opens Its Doors

UK-based distributor HIT Entertainment has announced the opening of HIT Entertainment Canada, Inc. Officially launched on August 1, 2002, the Toronto-based office will function under the leadership of vice president Pam Westman, and is comprised of an entirely Canadian staff who are responsible for video, DVD and audio sales and distribution, as well as marketing, consumer products, licensing and broadcast sales for HIT's brands in Canada. "HIT recognizes the importance of having a corporate office in Canada," said Rob Lawes, CEO, HIT Entertainment.

Cinar Agrees To Pay Restitution To Telefilm Canada

CINAR Corporation announced that it has reached an agreement with Telefilm Canada to make full restitution for all investments and other financial subsidies made by Telefilm Canada in CINARs productions that have been decertified, or for productions for which final certification will not be granted by the Canadian Audio-visual Certification Office (CAVCO). Under the terms of the agreement, CINAR will repay Telefilm Canada approximately $2,594,000 in full reimbursement of investments and subsidies including interest.

Cambridge Animation Systems Sponsors Awards For Canadian Students

Cambridge Animation Systems, the exclusive developer of Animo software, has signed a five-year sponsorship with the Broadcast Educators Association of Canada (BEAC) to award the best student animator and his or her college or university. The total value of the sponsorship is more than CA$100,000. Under the annual program, students will create animation clips up to 60 seconds in length using traditional or digital animation processes. A panel of experts will judge the clips.
