Comedian and writer Steve Marmel will host the 30th Annual Annie Awards. Marmel, who is nominated at this year's Annie's for his work on THE FAIRLY ODDPARENTS (Outstanding Achievement for Music in an Animated Television Program), where he serves as a writer and story editor, has had a 15-year career as a stand-up comedian, including a one man show for HBO and appearances on COMEDY CENTRAL, THE TONIGHT SHOW with Jay Leno and POLITICALLY INCORRECT with Bill Maher.

The Visual Effects Society, an organization comprised of visual effects professionals who desire to honor, advance and promote visual effects for its membership and the industry as a whole, has announced the nominees for its 1st Annual VES Awards.

For the first time a critics group has singled out digital characters with their own awards category. The Critics' Choice Awards are bestowed by the Broadcast Film Critics Association to honor the finest in cinematic achievement. Since 2002 had so many strong CG characters, the group has added the category of Best Digital Acting, with THE LORD OF THE RINGS' Gollum competing against HARRY POTTER's house elf Dobby and STAR WARS: EPISODE II's light-saber wielding Yoda. For Best Animated Feature, the nominees are ICE AGE, LILO AND STITCH, SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON and SPIRITED AWAY.
Lara Croft may be walking a red carpet next to PacMan, as video game stars are about to get their first awards ceremony. U.S. cable network The New TNN, a unit of the MTV Network's division of Viacom Inc., has announced plans to host an awards show honoring the creators and stars of the best video games. Airing exclusively on The New TNN, the Video Game Awards is scheduled to debut in the latter part of 2003, with a two-hour telecast. The show is the brainchild of and executive produced by Albie Hecht, president of film and television entertainment for The New TNN.

The Communicator Awards is an international competition for Video/Film & Multi-media founded by communications professionals to recognize excellence in the communications field. ASIFA-Hollywood is currently accepting entries for the 30th Annual Annie Awards. Deadline to receive entries is Friday, October 4, 2002. The winners of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 29th Annual Student Academy Awards competition have been announced. Production company Super 78 created a graphics package for the 5th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, held at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on February 28, 2002. Drawing on the inspiration of the early 1980s gaming experience as the aesthetic foundation, Super 78 creative director Brent Young developed the look for the awards presentation. "Our goal was to create a vibe that was both retro and contemporary, TRON meets MATRIX, connecting the fact that this is an industry with a history and a future," Young explained.

The 16th Annual Goya Awards, the Spanish Film Academys equivalent to the U.S. Academy Awards, were presented February 2, 2002. The awards honor Spanish produced films. Independent animated feature EL BOSQUE ANIMADO (THE LIVING FOREST) directed by Manolo Gómez & Angel de la Cruz won two awards, Best Original Song and Best Animated Film. The Best Animated Short Film was POLLO, directed by Manuel Sirgo.
The British equivalent of the Academy Awards, the BAFTAs, were presented on February 24, 2002 at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. THE LORD OF THE RINGS won five awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Visual Effects. SHREK took the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay, beating four live-action films including LORD OF THE RINGS and Golden Globe adapted screenplay winner A BEAUTIFUL MIND. SHREK is nominated for an Academy Award in this same category. The BAFTA Award for Best Short Animation went to Suzie Templeton for her film DOG.
