Sprockets Closes Record Breaking Festival With Awards

Sprockets Toronto International Film Festival for Children announced 11 awards in three categories on May 8, 2005, at the Isabel Bader Theatre. Five awards were decided upon by childrens juries, two audience-choice awards were determined by festival-goers of all ages, and four awards for the Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase were decided by a jury of film-industry professionals. The curtain fell on the 8th-annual event with more than 20,000 children and family members, an increase of 20% from last year, seeing 87 films from 26 countries.

VES Protests Oscar Presentation

The Visual Effects Society (VES) joined the American Cinema Editor (ACE) in filing letters of protest last week to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, objecting to this years new time saving Academy Awards telecast for select craftspeople, according to the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

A number of Oscars were handed out to winners seated in the audience or assembled onstage with other nominees, including SPIDER-MAN 2 vfx winners John Dykstra, Scott Stokdyk, Anthony LaMolinara and John Frazier.

On April 2, Nickelodeon hosted its 18th annual Kids Choice Awards, which was hosted by Ben Stiller. For favorite cartoon, SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS took home the prize. Winning favorite movie was Brad Birds superhero send-up THE INCREDIBLES. Will Smiths performance in DreamWorks SHARK TALE earned him the favorite voice from an animated movie. Though SHREK 2 lost out in the favorite movie category, the game SHREK 2 took home favorite game.

Triplets of Belleville Wins Top Genie Award

Oscar-nominee THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE won the Best Film prize at the 25th Genie Awards, Canada's top film award, which was held on March 21, 2005, in Toronto.

Seamless visual effects drama HEAD IN THE CLOUDS, starring Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz and Stuart Townsend, directed by John Duigan, took home the most awards for the categories of editing, costume, score and cinematography.

In the animation front, Chris Landreths Oscar winner RYAN won for animated short.

Half-Life 2 Scores Multiple Wins at Game Developers Choice Awards

HALF-LIFE 2 and Eugene Jarvis took top honors in the 5th annual Game Developers Choice Awards given by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) at a ceremony the evening of March 9, during the 2005 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

The big guns at the show were 3: HALO 2 (from Bungie/Microsoft), HALF-LIFE 2 (Valve/Vivendi) and WORLD OF WARCRAFT (Blizzard) all of them huge budget productions with great visuals and sound, but a surprising audience favorite was KATAMARI DAMACY (Namco), which was simple, but very creative.

THE AVIATOR has won four BAFTAs at the Feb. 12, 2005, Orange British Academy Film Awards. Martin Scorseses Howard Hughes biopic received awards in the categories Film, Actress in a Supporting Role for Cate Blanchett, Make-Up & Hair and Production Design. The effects on the film were done by Camera e-Motion, New Deal Studios and Sony Pictures Imageworks.
