Record Number of Entries for 2009 Student Academy Awards

A record 559 entries, from students representing 103 U.S. colleges and universities, are in competition for the 2009 Student Academy Awards. In addition, a record 57 entries from 39 countries have submitted in the Honorary Foreign Film award category; the pool includes first-ever entries from Egypt and Estonia. The competition -- now in its 36th year -- will culminate in the presentation of trophies and prize money on Saturday, June 13, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Humane Society Honors Bolt, Handy Manny

The 23rd annual Genesis Awards honored Disney's BOLT and HANDY MANNY on Saturday, March 28.

BIG LOVE's Ginnifer Goodwin presented the award for best feature film to the producers of BOLT, a charming animated tale of a movie star dog who discovers the pleasures of real dog life, along with the sad truth about unwanted and abandoned cats and dogs.

And Playhouse Disney's HANDY MANNY won a Children's Programming award for episode "Manny's Mouse Traps."

82nd Academy Awards Moves to March

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, live at 8:30 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network. The ceremony will once again take place at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood.

Nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards will take place Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 5:30 a.m., PT from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles.

LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space Win Six NAViGaTR Awards Each

The winners of the 2008 NAViGaTR Awards were announced Monday, revealing the winners in 44 categories. Multiple awards went to Andrew Lackey, Claire Boissiere, Dave Feise, David Smith, David Swenson, Luci Black, Mark Healey, Martin Lynagh, and Michelle Ducker, which are three more than last year.

Out of its ten nominations, LITTLEBIGPLANET won six awards: Game of the Year, Game Design, Graphics/Technical, Innovation in Game Play, Original Children's Game, and Supporting Performance in a Comedy for Stephen Fry.

Simpsons Keep on for Two Additional Seasons

FOX has ordered two additional seasons of THE SIMPSONS, which will bring the longest-running series in primetime television history through its 22nd season. The 44-episode pickup ensures the series will reach 493 episodes. THE SIMPSONS airs Sundays (8-8:30 p.m. ET/PT) on FOX.

Dark Knight, Benjamin Button Win Art Directors Guild Awards

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON won for Period Film, and THE DARK KNIGHT for Fantasy Film, at the 13th Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards. The awards were held Saturday in Beverly Hills, and also honored George Lucas and Paul Sylbert.

At this Sunday's Academy Awards, CHANGELING, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, THE DARK KNIGHT, THE DUCHESS and REVOLUTIONARY ROAD will be up for the Oscar for Art Direction.

Jessica Biel to Host Academy's Sci-Tech Awards

Actress Jessica Biel will host the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Scientific and Technical Awards on Saturday, February 7, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills.

Among the six awards that Biel will present during the evening is the Academy's Gordon E. Sawyer Award, an Oscar statuette, which is being bestowed on Ed Catmull for his lifetime of technical contributions and leadership in the field of computer graphics for the motion picture industry.

VES Show Offered at NATPE

Homerun Ent., for the first time, is offering The Visual Effects Society's one-hour televised awards special at NATPE, reports C21MEDIA. The awards show, held to highlight the best in visual effects in film, TV, animation, commercials and videogames, is being offered for international broadcast after February 26, 2009.

The show will be held in Hollywood on February 21.

Interactive Achievement Awards Headed to IFC in April

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) and IFC (Independent Film Channel) will bring the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards (IAA) to television audiences for the first time.

The awards will take place on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the Red Rock Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The IAA will be broadcast on IFC in April 2009 and comprise of a half hour special with highlights from the IAAs and will be hosted by comedian, actor and proud game enthusiast, Jay Mohr.

Tom Kenny, the familiar voice behind film and TV's SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, will handle hosting duties again this year for the 36th Annual Annie Awards on Friday, January 30, 2009, at UCLA's Royce Hall in Los Angeles, CA. The black-tie evening begins with a pre-reception at 6 p.m. followed by the Annie Awards ceremony at 8 p.m. and post award party at 10 p.m. All events will be held at Royce Hall. The Art Directors Guild has announced nominations in eight categories of Production Design for motion pictures, television and commercials competing in ADG's 13th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards for 2008.

For Period Film, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON is up against CHANGELING, DOUBT, FROST/NIXON and DOUBT.

Sound Mixing Pits Superheroes, Robots, Bond & a Slumdog

THE DARK KNIGHT, IRON MAN, QUANTUM OF SOLACE, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and WALL-E were nominated for Best Picture honors from the Cinema Audio Society Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2008.

In the category for DVD Original Programming, the society also nominated Disney's animated LITTLE MERMAID: ARIEL'S BEGINNING.

The 45th CAS Awards will be held on February 14, 2009 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Millennium-Biltmore Hotel, Los Angeles.

4 Scientific and Technical Achievements to Be Honored with Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced four winners of Scientific and Technical Awards, which will be presented at the Beverly Wilshire on Saturday, February 7, 2009.

Unlike other Academy Awards to be presented this year, achievements receiving Scientific and Technical Awards need not have been developed and introduced during 2008. Rather, the achievements must demonstrate a proven record of contributing significant value to the process of making motion pictures.

Academy to Honor Mark Kimball with Bonner Medal

Mark Kimball, a computer scientist and motion picture technologist with more than 28 years experience in the movie industry, has been voted the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The award -- a medallion -- will be presented at the Scientific and Technical Awards Dinner on Saturday, February 7, at the Beverly Wilshire.

Boston, London and Chicago Love WALL-E

Film critics associations from Boston, London and Chicago are heaping more awards on WALL-E.

The Boston Society of Film Critics, who give out their awards on February 9, announced a tie for Best Picture between WALL-E and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Best Animated Film also went to WALL-E.

WALL-E picked up Best Picture and Best Animated Feature from the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards, also winning for Best Original Score (Thomas Newman) and Best Original Screenplay (Andrew Stanton & Jim Reardon).
