Russia's First Animated Cartoon TV Channel Starts Broadcasting

In April, the first 24/7 animated cartoon TV channel "2o2" has started broadcasting in Russia, reports russia-ic.com.The new 2o2 is airing cartoons from England, France, Italy, Czechia and Japan, but the majority of air-time is given to American animated cartoons. Russian films comprise two hours per day.Targeted at an audience, 11-34, the site reports that about $15 million will be spent on the TV channel's content and promotion this year.

BET Adds Three Toons to Lineup

At the up-front presentation of its fall 2007 lineup, BET announced the addition of three new animated TV series to the most ambitious slate of programming in its 26-year history.

Orlando Jones (MAD TV) and Ali LeRoi (EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS) have teamed up to create BUFU, an animated sketch comedy show in the tradition of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and SCTV. BUFU will premiere in fall 2007.

Transformers Animated Feature Returns to Theaters in U.K.

U.K. distribution firm Metrodome Distribution is set to re-release the 1986 animated feature TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The film will make a two-week run in one theater in London's West End starting May 4, 2007. Metrodome hopes to capitalize on the buzz leading up to the theatrical release of Michael Bay's live-action TRANSFORMERS feature in July. Metrodome will also release a two-disc, remastered widescreen edition of the animated feature on DVD June 4.

San Diego Latino Film Festival 2007

The 14th annual festival is now accepting entries for the 2007 festival. The festival is seeking innovative works that are 'by,' 'about' or 'for' the Latino community, that have been produced between 2005-2007, as well as Spanish-language productions. This is a competitive festival with awards given to Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short. The festival will include a special centerpiece showcase of international animation and U.S. Latino graphic artists.

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo Wins at Japanese Academy Awards

In a ceremony that took place in Tokyo on Feb. 16, 2007, Madhouse Studios' TOKI WO KAKERU SHOUJO (THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME) took home best animated film at the 30th Japanese Academy Awards. The other nominees included GEDO SENKI (TALES OF EARTHSEA), BRAVE STORY, DETECTIVE CONAN: THE PRIVATE EYES' REQUIEM and ARASHI NO YORU NI.

Happy Feet & Danish Poet Top Animated Oscar Honors

The Oscar animation winners offered a few surprises as the top animation awards went to HAPPY FEET for Best Animated Feature and the indie 2D short THE DANISH POET (NFB) by Torill Kove won for Best Animated Short tonight (Feb. 25, 2007) during the 79th Annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Echoing its earlier awards at the VES Awards, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MANS CHEST scored the big win for Best Visual Effects. Taking the stage to accept from ILM were John Knoll, Hal Hickel, Charles Gibson and Allen Hall.

Disney/Pixar's CARS took Best Animated Feature prize while the rest of The Annie Awards were more spread out amongst the contenders as the Cartoon Network series, FOSTER'S HOME FOR IMAGINARY won the top TV category, Best Animated Television Production at 34th Annual Annie Awards held Feb. 11, 2007, at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California. FOSTER'S won three awards and DreamWorks projects took home the lions share of awards, winning in nine categories at ASIFA-Hollywoods black-tie ceremony attended by more than 1,300 industry insiders and the public.

Howie Mandel gets a visit by Bobby, his animated four-year-old boy alter ego, on tonight's (Feb. 12, 2007) edition of DEAL OR NO DEAL at 8:00 pm on NBC. It came about through the auspices of www.kabillion.com, the kids' online network where the original episodes of Mandel's 1990-1998 Fox network series, BOBBY'S WORLD, can be found for on-demand viewing, with new intros by Mandel. The Film Roman animation studio co-created and animated the series with Mandel.

Taekwon V Sets Korean Animated Film Record

TAEKWON V, a classic Korean film about a tae kwon do trained robot has set a new record for domestic animated movies, reports ARIRANG NEWS. TAEKWON V attracted more than 500,000 moviegoers in its first 13 days of release breaking the previous record set by BLUE SEAGULL in 1994.

TAEKWON V, originally released in 1976, has been digitally restored. Industry experts believe the film's popularity will continue as the movie has attracted an average of 200,000 viewers a week.

Marvel To Produce Teen Avengers Animated Feature

In an interview with IGN.com, Craig Kyle, vp of creative development for animation at Marvel Studios, said that the company is working on an animated direct-to-video with a working title of TEEN AVENGERS. Kyle said that unlike the studios' previous animated productions, the TEEN AVENGERS film would be geared to a younger audience -- more in the vein of a Saturday morning cartoon.
