Animation Featured in Comedy Central's 2008 Development Slate

Comedy Central's 2008-2009 development slate includes several animated projects.

Projects in development run the gamut from short-form and sketch/variety to scripted narrative and animation, as well as Comedy Central's first foray into medieval comedy, and feature a cross-section of top comedic talent including Snoop Dogg, Andy Richter, David Alan Grier, Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter, Nick Swardson, Daniel Tosh, Bobby Lee and Opie & Anthony.

A Rat, A Wolf & An Armored Bear Win Oscars

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has handed out the winners of the 80th Academy Awards. The first animated related prize of the evening went to Brad Bird for Outstanding Animated Feature for RATATOUILLE. In the category of Animated Short Subject, director Suzie Templeton and producer Hugh Welchman took home Oscars for the stop-motion film, PROKOFIEV'S PETER AND THE WOLF.

Second Annual Elan Awards Announced

Video game, animation and digital arts students, creators and bosses gathered Friday for the Second Annual Elan Awards in Vancouver.

FAMILY GUY creator Seth MacFarlane hosted, closing his performance with a singing "Stewie" act and won his first Elan.

Monster Closes Licensing Deal to African TV

Monster Distributes announced the completion of two packages sales of animated shows to Africa.

MNET/KTV licensed I'M AN ANIMAL (preschool series featuring animals introducing themselves), SLIM PIG (preschool series about a 2D pig living in a 3D world) and IT'S JERRY TIME (reality cartoon about the weird and hilarious misadventures of Jerry), as well as the special BANJO THE WOODPILE CAT, a traditional animated tale of a loveable kitten.

Indian Animation Firms Team Up

DQ Entertainment and Percept Picture Company have signed a memorandum of understanding to co-produce three animation films in 2009-2010.

Two of the three will be in the mythology genre and the third is planned as a Bollywood masala flick.

Tapaas Chakravarti, Chairman and CEO of DQ Entertainment Limited said, "Bollywood's foray into animated Indian feature films with HANUMAN has triggered many announcements of animated features by Bollywood houses."

Ratatouille Golden at Annie Awards

During a black-tie event at Royce Hall in Los Angeles, ASIFA-Hollywood handed out prizes at the 35th Annual Annie Awards recognizing the year's best animation across film, television, commercials, videogames and short subjects. Host Tom Kenny entertained the crowd with his usual dose of manic humor, joking that HORTON HEARS A WHO was a Roger Daltrey fusion project about tinnitus.

Gazoon Conquers Continent

New non-dialogue animated series GAZOON (30x3.5) from Sparkling Animation Studios in co-production with TF1 France has been picked up by YLE Finland within days of signing with Monster Distributes. The series has already sold to RAI in Italy and Samanyolu TV and Mehtap TV in Turkey.

Take a group of wild animals in the African savanna, add wacky behavior, and you've got GAZOON -- an animated comedy with a tender and surreal touch aimed at kids 4-10.

9 Story Secures Robin Squires for DTV

Toronto-based 9 Story Ent. has acquired the rights to Joan Clark's celebrated book THE HAND OF ROBIN SQUIRES to develop and produce into a direct-to-video animated feature. 9 Story is working with children's industry veteran Peter Moss to adapt the story of a young boy's elusive quest to unravel a century's worth of secrets and ultimately find a hidden pirate treasure.

Clowes To Pen Gondry Father/Son Duo's Animated Feature

Michel Gondry has confirmed that his past collaborator on such films as GHOST WORLD and ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL, Daniel Clowes, will pen the script for his and his son Paul's animated feature, reports /Film.com.

Based on Paul's universe, which Gondry described as a cross between REN & STIMPY and gangster films, the film, MIGEL MUNYA, follows a dictator who kills his people if they create art that is better than his own.

Leading U.K.-based media group Entertainment Rights Plc today announced it has sealed significant broadcast agreements for the new TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED series (26x22), plus a 70-minute special episode. ER secured the worldwide television distribution rights (excluding North America), covering television distribution across both free and pay TV platforms for the series.

J.J. Sedelmaier Animates Psych Webtoon

In a first for the channel, USA Network is taking a new approach to "pod-busting" with the introduction of THE BIG ADVENTURES OF LITTLE SHAWN AND GUS, a series of animated vignettes based on the hit series PSYCH, created by J.J. Sedelmaier Prods. Each vignette explores the timeless mysteries of childhood through the characters of young Shawn and Gus. The six animations range in length from 50 seconds to two minutes. USA will unveil a new adventure in the second break of every episode of PSYCH beginning Friday, Jan. 11 at 10:00 pm PCT when the show returns with new episodes.

Transformers Animated Gives CN New Year's Boost

Cartoon Network launched into 2008 with the half-hour original series premiere of TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED (Saturday, Jan. 5, 10:30 am), charting impressive double-digit delivery and ratings gains among key kid demos and ranking #1 in its time period versus all broadcast and cable competition with boys 6-11 and boys 2-11. The results are based on preliminary data from Nielsen Media Research.

Red Princess Blues Animated Launches

The makers of the live-action feature RED PRINCESS BLUES have launched the seven-minute animated prequel, RED PRINCESS BLUES ANIMATED: THE BOOK OF VIOLENCE. Alex Ferrari is the creator, writer and producer of the film with Dan Cregan serving as director and producer.

The prequel follows a 12-year-old girl who finds herself in a strange country looking for her father. She is taken in by a unique-looking man by the name of Nino. She soon discovers the "Book of Violence" and slowly begins her journey that one day will lead to vengeance.

Technicolor & DreamWorks To Produce Indian Animation

Thomson SA, the parent of Technicolor Services, announced it has signed an agreement with DreamWorks Animation to produce animated films in India. Financial details were not disclosed.

Thomson said the partnership would center on the Paprikaas Animated Film Studio in Bangalore, which the French group invested in this past February.

Thomson said it aims to become the world leader in postproduction services for animated films.
