World VFX Day and UpliftHER are teaming up on an online event that examines women’s issues and developments within and beyond the visual effects industry; a diverse lineup of industry speakers will join the March 8 presentation on the World VFX Day YouTube channel.
The VFX supervisor, born in China before coming to the U.S. at age 9, shares her work overseeing 1100 visual effects shots on the Disney+ series that included the trickster God Monkey King’s transformation from falcon to tiger to fish, various gravity-defying flying characters, digital doubles, and an ambitious waterfall setting for a dangerous cliff jump.
For the VFX supervisor and Alpha Studios founder, the need to ‘be so good they can’t ignore you’ has fueled her drive to succeed as a woman, Chinese immigrant, and wheelchair user, and advocate for others in an industry short on representation of those with visible, or non-visible, disabilities.
