Beauty and the Beast Celebrates 10th Anniversary With Large Format Debut

Walt Disney Pictures' Academy Award-winning animated classic, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with the January 1, 2002 release of a new Large Format Cinema Special Edition. Following the success of FANTASIA 2000, which was the first Disney film to be released in large format and grossed over $51 million, this special edition includes the newly animated six-minute musical sequence "Human Again," featuring the song written for the original film by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken.

Futurama, Family Guy Not Fairing Well

Although ranking slightly higher than last week, FAMILY GUY is still drawing poor ratings. Its Thursday night at 8:00 pm time slot is a tough one, and the show only managed 86th place this week with a 2.8 rating/7 share. FUTURAMA is not doing much better. In its regular time slot on FOX, Sunday at 7:00 pm, the show is not finding viewers. In 83rd place, FUTURAMA drew a 3.1 rating/5 share. KING OF THE HILL, which follows FUTURAMA, ranked slightly higher, with a 4.6 rating/7 share. Once again, THE SIMPSONS reigned supreme, landing in 35th place with a 7.1 rating/11 share.

DirecTV — Level13.net Animated Film Festival Winners

Zach Schlappi took home the grand prize "best in show" award at the first annual DirecTV Level13.net animated film festival. The awards were presented on December 11, 2001. Zach won for his 3D animated film PASTA FOR WAR, which satirizes propaganda newsreels of the 1930s. He will receive a DirecTV system as well as $2,500. Winners were chosen in three categories: 2D, 3D and experimental animation. The panel of judges included DEXTER'S LABORATORY creator Genndy Tartakovsky, Emmy Award-winning animator Eric Radomski and co-editors of Mad Magazine, John Ficarra and Nick Meglin.

Academy Award For Best Animated Feature To Be Given For 2001

Months of anticipation, followed by concern that not enough films would be submitted or found eligible, have led to the announcement that the 74th Academy Awards will include a category for Best Animated Feature. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued this press release announcing that a feature-length animated film will be awarded a competitive Oscar for the first time next March at the 74th Academy Award presentations.

Cambridge Animation Systems has released Animo 4.0 software for the Mac OS X allowing Mac OS X users to have the same functionality as users running on the Windows operating system. Los Angeles-based design studio B1 Media has launched a games division, B1/Games, and hopes to develop products for set-top game consoles. B1 Media has primarily been a provider of interactive design for DVDs and has created games and interactive content for numerous DVD titles like DINOSAUR, UNBREAKABLE, THE SIXTH SENSE and PLANET OF THE APES. The company also recently launched a broadcast design division, B1/Broadcast.
