The Sharpe Company Expands

Nevada-based licensing firm The Sharpe Company has opened a branch office in Los Angeles and expanded their executive staff. In addition to the new office, Sharpe has added Mary Kean as senior licensing director and Kathy Gorden as creative director. Prior to joining Sharpe, Kean was manager of brand merchandising at AskJeeves.com and The Roger Richman Agencys director of licensing for such celebrity icons as Albert Einstein and Steve McQueen. Kathy Gorden has extensive marketing, design and print production experience.

4Kids To Produce New Ninja Turtles

4Kids Entertainment, Inc. will produce 26 episodes of a new animated TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES television series. The new NINJA TURTLES series is scheduled to premiere in the first quarter of 2003 on the Fox Saturday Morning Block programmed by 4Kids. In addition to producing the television series, 4Kids will also serve as the exclusive merchandise licensing agent for the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES property worldwide. The TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES were created in May 1984 when Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman published a forty-page black and white comic book.

Sony Pictures Establishes Feature Animation Unit

Fresh off the record-breaking success of the effects-heavy feature film SPIDER-MAN, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment (SPDE) has announced they will form an all CG feature animation division, to be headed by former DreamWorks executives Sandra Rabins and Penney Finkelman Cox. Rabins and Cox will be responsible for the development and production of all-CG animated features and will report to SPDE president Yair Landau.

DIC And Nick Partner To Launch Sunday Movie Toons

DIC Entertainment has licensed its package of original feature length animated movies, 39 films in all, to Nickelodeon for broadcast on Sunday afternoons beginning in October 2002. The deal represents the biggest production order DIC has had in its twenty year history and calls for DIC to deliver the 39 movies over three years. "We have put together a team of incredibly talented award winning writers, producers and directors," said DIC CEO Andy Heyward.

Lisa O’Brien Joins Super 78 As Director Of Marketing

Production company Super 78 has hired Lisa OBrien as the companys director of marketing. Formerly an executive producer at Rhythm & Hues, O'Brien honed her experience on commercials for Sunbeam, Matchlight, Kellogg's Pop-Tarts and Lexus. She began her producing career at Digital Productions then joined Rhythm & Hues in 1987 as a line producer, becoming executive producer for the studio's CGI television commercial division in 1990, where she worked until 1996.

Vinton Studios Makes Heads Spin With Jell-O Gel Sticks Spot

Vinton Studios recently completed an animated spot for Kraft Foods' new Jell-O Gel Sticks via agency FCB/NY, combining stop-motion, cel animation and CG. The spot opens with a green Jell-O gel stick in the background while a 2D stick figure character looks at it and scratches his head. He moves in to investigate the massive gel stick, pokes it and whistles for his friends to join him. Two acrobatic stick figures jump up and down on the gel stick, then catapult off to form a wobbly stick figure pyramid.

DigiCel Releases Flipbook Version 3.1

DigiCel, Inc. has released the latest version of its 2D animation software, FlipBook version 3.1. This newest version adds curved path, multi-plane camera moves and xsheet printing to the features that are part of version 3.0, released in February 2002. Version 3 features include more speed, master color palettes, color models and copy and paste between scenes. Version 3.1 is available as a free upgrade to all customers currently using version 3. Spider-Man Spins Record Box Office

Grossing a whopping $114.8M in its debut weekend, Sony Pictures' action- adventure SPIDER-MAN, with visual effects by Sony Imageworks, dominated the box office this weekend, setting all kinds of records along the way. Along with becoming the highest grossing debut in motion picture history, (besting previous record holder HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE, which debuted with $90.3M in November 2001), the film also had the best single day gross (Saturday, May 4, 2002: $43.6M vs. HARRY POTTER's $33.5M) and became the fastest film to cross $100M, reaching that milestone in just three days.

MTV's Spider-Man Series Begins Production

Production is underway at Sony's Culver City studios on MTV's animated series SPIDER-MAN. Now in college, Peter Parker must juggle academics, work as a Web designer for the Daily Bugle, his relationship with Mary Jane Watson, fighting super-villains and criminals and maintain his secret identity as Spider-Man. The series is being created in CG but will have a classic animation look, and feature a seemingly realistic neon lit city.

Peppermint Goes Exploring With Columbia Tri-Star

Distribution outfit peppermint has struck a first-time deal with Columbia Tri-Star International Television (CTIT) and BBC Choice for the new adult animation series PETEY & JAYDEE GO EXPLORING. The series of 52 x 45-second vignettes follow the adventures of two quirky aliens as they take viewers on an irreverent joyride. CTIT plans to air the series on Japan's all-anime cable-satellite channel Animax. They also acquired all television, merchandising and broadband distribution rights for Sony Entertainment Television (SET) in Latin America.

Instead of Boardwalk and Park Place you'll find The Green Goblin and Dr. Octopus in the new Spider-Man Collector's Edition MONOPOLY Game. Based on the comic book series, USAOPOLY has launched their collectible MONOPOLY board game in conjunction with the release of the live-action film SPIDER-MAN. The customized game board features classic Marvel artwork of 22 of Spider-Man's enemies, including Mysterio, Sandman, Scorpion, Electro and Jackal. Rogue Creative Rises From The Ashes Of MTV Commercials

MTV alum's Nick Litwinko and Peter Reichert have formed Rogue Creative, a commercial production company with interests in creative content development and documentaries. Rogue maintains offices in New York, Los Angeles and Seattle with a roster that includes many former MTV Animation creatives. Executive producer Nick Litwinko, based in New York, helped launch MTV Commercials in 1999, after almost a decade of work on various MTV series including BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD, AEON FLUX and CARTOON SUSHI.

Toon Factory Finds New Production Partner

After finding a new co-production partner, French animation company Toon Factory has started up production again on two new series. The production of the 52 x 13-minute animated series HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR MONSTER and the 52 x 13-minute series KID CLONES IN SPACE, had been interrupted after the withdrawal of bankrupt co-pro partner Luxembourg's Neuroplanet. HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR MONSTER is now scheduled to broadcast in September 2003 by French partner TF1, while production on KID CLONES IN SPACE will start by the end of 2002.
