'Boy and the World'

NEW YORK -- Independent animation distributor GKIDS continues its Academy Award streak with double Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature with Boy and the World and When Marnie Was There. This marks eight nominations for GKIDS since 2010, five nominations in the last three years, and the third time the independent distributor has received two nominations in the animation category in the same year. GKIDS previously received double nominations last year for Song of the Sea and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, and A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita in 2012.

Brazilian artist Alê Abreu’s multiple award-winning masterpiece Boy and the World is a riotous explosion of music and color, a breathtakingly original and vibrant cinematic experience that depicts the wonders and struggles of the modern world as seen through the eyes of a young boy.

Based on the novel by Joan G. Robinson, When Marnie Was There is the newest film from Studio Ghibli, and the second feature film by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the director of The Secret World of Arrietty.

'When Marnie Was There'

As the distributor of award-winning animation that appeals to adult and family audiences, GKIDS also received previous nominations for Ernest & Celestine in 2014 and The Secret of Kells in 2010. Today’s nominations of Boy and the World and When Marnie Was There are the seventh and eighth Best Animated Feature nominations for GKIDS, the most by any independent distributor since the category was established.
