‘Detective Pikachu’ Posts Strong Debut But ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Remains Box Office Champ
Avengers: Endgame continued its domestic and international box office dominance, taking the top spot for the third straight week, racking up an estimated $63 million domestically and another $102 million internationally to bring its cume to $723 million / $2.48 billion.
However, audiences showed plenty of love for Warner Bros.’ POKÉMON Detective Pikachu, which delivered a record opening for a video game adaption. The Rob Letterman-directed action adventure, based on the tremendously popular 2016 video game of the same name and featuring the voice of Ryan Reynolds in the title role, took in $58 million domestically and another $112 million internationally for a total opening tally of $170 million. The film’s opening weekend domestic haul tops the previous record set by Lara Croft Tomb Raider in 2001, which opened with $47.7 million.
STX Entertainment’s UglyDolls continued its rapid box office decline, dropping to 7th place in the weekend tally with $3.9 million, bringing its two-week domestic total to $14.2 million. The film did pickup another $1.6 million overseas.
Fox Searchlight’s Tolkien, in a limited release, took in a disappointing $2.1 million, while Marvel’s Captain Marvel stayed in the top ten, bringing in another $1.8 million domestically for a global cume of $1.12 billion.
