Box Office Report: 'Hotel Transylvania' Sony’s Top Animated Film
Four new nationwide releases all underperformed this weekend, allowing Ben Affleck’s period political thriller Argo to move up to first place. Argo made $12.4 million this weekend for a total of $60.8 million in the film’s three weeks at the box office.
Hotel Transylvania jumped from fourth place last weekend up to second place this weekend with $9.5 million. The movie has now grossed $130.4 million, making it Sony Pictures Animation's top animated movie feature ahead of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs ($124.9 million)
In third place, Cloud Atlas had the highest debut among this weekend's newcomers with $9.4 million, the lowest nationwide launch ever for the Wachowski siblings, who co-directed with Tom Tykwer.
Paramount's Paranormal Activity 4 slid to fourth place this weekend, making $8.7 million for a 10-day total of $42.6 million.
Fifth place was a tie between Taken 2 and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, both of which brought in $8 million this weekend. For Taken 2, that brings its total to $117.4 million through four weekends. Silent Hill, however, opened to $8 million, well below the first movie’s $20.2 million opening.
Sony family comedy Here Comes the Boom came in seventh, making $5.5 million on its third weekend out for a total of $30.6 million.
Summit Entertainment's horror feature Sinister came in at number eight this weekend, bringing in $5.1 million for a total of $39.5 million.
In ninth place, Summit Entertainment’s Alex Cross, starring Tyler Perry as the fabled Washington, D.C., detective popularized in James Patterson's book series, made $5.1 million for a total of $19.5 million.
Rounding out the list at number 10, Paramount’s Fun Size brought in only $4.1 million for its debut, placing it just ahead of surfing drama Chasing Mavericks, which opened in 13th place with just $2.2 million.
