Box Office Report: '42' is the Magic Number
The baseball biopic 42, from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, scored at the weekend box office, bringing in an estimated $27.3 million for a first place debut.
Horror movie parody Scary Movie 5, the weekend’s other new wide release, debuted in second place, earning $15.2 million for the Weinstein Co.’s Dimension label.
DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods came in third place, taking in $13.2 million at the domestic box office for a total of $142.5 million. Overseas, the film has earned $25.5 million for distributor Fox for a worldwide total of $387.3 million.
In fourth place, Paramount's G.I. Joe: Retaliation crossed the $100 million mark domestically. The action movie picked up an additional $10.8 million in its third weekend, bringing its tally to $102.5 million.
Sony's horror feature Evil Dead, from TriStar, FilmDistrict and Ghost House, took in $9.5 million in its second outing for a fifth place showing with a total of $41.5 million.
Universal's Jurassic Park in 3D, in its second weekend, ranked sixth. Collecting $8.9 million, the re-release has taken in $31.9 million to date.
In seventh place, FilmDistrict's Olympus Has Fallen picked up another $7.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $81.9 million.
Disney's Oz The Great and Powerful was in eighth place with $4.9 million and a domestic total of $219.4 million. Worldwide, the movie's earnings now stand at $471 million.
In ninth place, Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor came in ninth place, bringing in $4.5 million for a total of $45.4 million.
Rounding out the list at number 10, Focus Film’s drama The Place Beyond the Pines, produced by Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, expanded this weekend, securing a foothold in the top ten. Earning $4.1 million, the film has brought in $5.5 million to date.
Outside of the top 10, To the Wonder, Terrence Malick's latest film, saw a limited release by Magnolia in 17 theaters as it also debuted on VOD. The film made $130,000 for a per-theater average of $7,647.
