The Dangerous Lives Of Altar Boys Revealed

It looks as though audiences will finally get to see the animation Todd McFarlane created for the Jodie Foster-produced film THE DANGEROUS LIVES OF ALTAR BOYS. The film was completed in 2000 and set to debut at Sundance 2001, but the premiere was delayed because the animated sequences were not finished. The film will now debut on January 18 at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. Peter Care directed this Southern Gothic drama set in the 70s, which centers on the efforts of Catholic schoolboys to retrieve an obscene comic book they've drawn.

Activision Gets Smart With Gray Matter

Activision, Inc. has exercised its option to acquire the remaining 60% equity interest in Gray Matter Interactive Studios. Under the terms of the agreement, Gray Matter Interactive Studios will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision. Activision issued 133,690 shares of common stock in connection with the acquisition. "Gray Matter has a very talented team of programmers, designers and artists and we are confident that the studio's development strengths will further establish Activision as a leader in the PC action genre," stated Ron Doornink, president and COO of Activision.

What’s New For NATPE? Monster Distributes Launches New Series Of Why?

Animated pre-schooler WHY? has been awarded a production loan by the Irish Film Board, who is co-financing the series with Monster Distributes and Brown Bag Films. The new series goes into production in January 2002 and will be presented at NATPE. Monster Distributes will also be introducing new animated Christmas specials, THE LEGEND OF THE CANDY CANE and THE LEGEND OF THE THREE TREES, as well as selling its 13 x 30 award-winning series STORYKEEPERS, directed by Jimmy Murakami. STORYKEEPERS presents stories from the life of Jesus within an adventure story context.

What’s New For NATPE? Defiance Brings Kid Bugs To NATPE

Defiance Distribution and Screen Ventures are bringing their new childrens animated series MUCHIKKO - KID BUGS to NATPE 2002. The series is produced by POKEMON creator Shogakukan, SME and New Kids. Featuring 88 characters, such as Hanako the ladybug, inchworm brothers Tanaka and Endo, Yabe the water bug, Hamada the honeybee and 83 others, the MUCHIKKO characters use special skills and teamwork to overcome obstacles. Already popular with television audiences in Japan, the show has been supported by a successful merchandising campaign.

Raphan Says Blah! Blah! Blah!

Benita Raphan has joined creative agency Blah! Blah! Blah! as a sales representative. Until recently, Benita Raphan was an Inferno artist at New York-based visual effects company Quiet Man. Also a filmmaker, her most recent short film 2+2, co-directed with Clayton Hemmert of New York-based editing house Crew Cuts, will screen at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. Her award-winning animation work is also being featured in an episode of the Independent Film Channel Canada's INDIE NATION. Previously, Raphan was an agency creative specializing in animation, special FX and design. Blah! Blah!

Wild Brain And Egmont Make Pudding

Independent animation studio Wild Brain, Inc. has signed a co-production and development deal with Denmark's Egmont Imagination. The first co-production between the two companies is a 26 x 30' CG-animated series VANILLA PUDDING. The series will feature a quirky little girl who imagines herself as a superhero to handle the trials and tribulations of growing up. VANILLA PUDDING was created by in-house Wild Brain director Nicholas Weigel, with the pilot script penned by Emmy Award winner Sherri Stoner (TINY TOONS, ANIMANIACS, CASPER).

Iwerks And Simex Complete Merger

Iwerks Entertainment Inc. and Toronto-based SimEx Inc., have confirmed the completion of their previously announced merger. Iwerks is now a wholly owned subsidiary of SimEx Inc. The merger was made final on January 9, 2002. Pursuant to the terms of the merger, each share of Iwerks' issued and outstanding common stock, other than shares held in its treasury, was cancelled and automatically converted into the right to receive approximately $0.63 in cash, without interest. On the effective date, Iwerks had 3,554,301 shares of common stock issued and outstanding.

Louis Fournier Rejoins Cinar As Head Of Distribution

As part of Cinars restructuring program and in an effort to regain shareholder confidence, the company has appointed Louis Fournier as head of distribution. Cinar had previously employed Fournier for a period of eight years as vice president, sales & co-productions before he joined TVA-International in March 2000 as president of the youth and animation unit. Fournier will assume his new position on January 14, 2002. Fournier brings with him over eighteen years of expertise in the field of children's entertainment in the television and movie industry.

Lord Of The Rings Still Golden

Fantasy actioner THE LORD OF THE RINGS, with primary visual effects by WETA, held on to the top spot in its fourth week in theaters with $16.2M, just edging out the number two film A BEAUTIFUL MIND, which took in $15.2M in its second week in wide release. That gives LORD a smashing cume of $228.3M. A BEAUTIFUL MIND, with primary visual effects by Digital Domain, has grossed $58.4M so far. OCEANS ELEVEN, with visual effects by E=mc2 and Cinesite, slid another spot to fourth, earning $7.7M for a generous 6-week cume of $162.7M.

Shrek Picks Up Two More

SHREK continued its award winning streak this weekend by picking up the Peoples Choice Award for favorite motion picture and a Broadcast Film Critics Association Critics Choice Award for best animated feature. In the pre-Oscar animated feature race, SHREK has been the recipient of the majority of critics kudos, however WAKING LIFE did manage to grab the nod from the New York Film Critics Circle. The next major awards presented are the Golden Globes, where SHREK is the lone animated film in competition for Best Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy.

Microsoft Xbox Set For Japanese Debut

Microsoft Corp.s future-generation game console Xbox will go on sale at retail outlets throughout Japan on February 22, 2002 at a price of 34,800 yen (US$265). 50,000 Xbox Special Edition consoles designed exclusively for the Japanese market will also be available. The special console will be greenish-black with a translucent textured casing. The jewel portion of the box will have a silver logo with black lettering. A silver-plated key chain with an engraved serial number and Bill Gates signature will be included with the console as well.

Egmont Imagination will bring its interactive mystery series, SOLVE THE MYSTERY WITH INSPECTOR MCCLUE, to NATPE 2002. Indias Pentamedia Graphics Ltd. will present a slate of animated movies, home videos and series at NATPE 2002 including the new 3D animated feature ALIBABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES. The company is currently in production on SINBAD AND THE SECRET OF COLONIS, the 3D animated sequel to SINBAD: BEYOND THE VEIL OF MISTS.

Film Roman Sends Anti-Drug Message With The Works

Film Roman Commercials has created a youth-targeted animated television public service announcement for the Partnership for a Drug-Free America (PDFA). The 30-second spot was produced in-house by Film Roman Digital who utilized a combination of Adobe software, including Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects. The spot, titled "The Works" creatively illustrates how drugs can break down ones body. Targeting 6 to 8 year-olds, it will begin running in pro-bono media in January 2002.

Final Fantasy X Is A Best-Seller

Square Electronic Arts FINAL FANTASY X game for PlayStation 2 was number one in U.S. sales across all video game software categories in its first week of release, according to NPD Funworld Video Game Data. FINAL FANTASY X shipped to retailers nationwide on December 18, just in time for the Christmas holiday. In Japan, FINAL FANTASY X was released on July 19, 2001 and sold through 90% of the 2.14 million units it shipped in the first four days. It is the first PlayStation 2 title to reach the 2 million unit mark.

Nelvana Acquires Rights To The Berenstain Bears

Nelvana has acquired exclusive worldwide rights to produce a television series, made-for-video programs, theatrical motion pictures, and individual programs including made-for-television specials and movies, based on THE BERENSTAIN BEARS. Nelvana has already secured a relationship with Columbia Tristar to distribute THE BERENSTAIN BEARS videos in the United States; the first release is slated for 2003.
