Netflix has just announced that Zack Snyder, noted director of Watchmen, Man of Steel, 300 and the current Netflix zombie thriller, Army of the Dead, is on board to create and serve as executive producer of a new, unnamed anime series set in the world of Norse mythology. Jay Oliva, Snyder’s longtime creative partner on over a dozen live-action films, is also set as series creator in addition to showrunner, director, and executive producer. Oliva is currently in production on the Manila-set Netflix original anime series, Trese. Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller will produce the series alongside Snyder through Stone Quarry Animation, their production company’s newest venture with Oliva.

“Zack Snyder’s innovation in visual storytelling has pushed the industry forward and established him as one of the most distinctive filmmakers of his generation,” John Derderian, head of Anime programming for Netflix, said. “We are beyond excited to partner with him and his exceptional team to bring the iconic characters and stories of Norse mythology to life in his inimitable style,”

Netflix is in the midst of an unprecedented expansion of animation production. In the last year, they’ve announced several upcoming anime titles based on global IP, including Magic: The Gathering, Pacific Rim, Altered Carbon, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, and Transformers: War for Cybertron, all of which are currently in development. New anime series Cannon Busters, Seis Manos, and Levius will all launch later this year. The streaming giant is already the global home of ULTRAMAN, Aggretsuko, Castlevania, Devilman Crybaby, GODZILLA: The Planet Eater, BAKI, Violet Evergarden, B: The Beginning, and The Seven Deadly Sins
