WATCH: ‘Vivo’ and ‘The Mitchells vs. the Machines’ Making of Videos

Sony Pictures Imageworks shares some of their great work on the two Netflix CG animated films; MVM was just nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar, and both have garnered multiple Annie Award noms.

Sony Pictures Imageworks has shared some exclusive “Behind-the-Scenes” making of videos highlighting their great work on two hit Netflix CG animated features: the multi-Annie Award nominated Vivo and the Oscar and multi-Annie Award nominated The Mitchells vs. the Machines.

In Vivo, with songs by Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also voices the film’s titular kinkajou, SPI blended 3D and 2D animation into a vibrant, colorful, and often wild celebration of music as a universal language of friendship, family, and love.

Directed by Kirk DeMicco, the Oscar-nominated writer and director of The Croods and co-directed by Brandon Jeffords (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2)Vivo stars Tony Award-winning Hamilton creator Miranda, who also wrote and performs a number of new songs. Produced by Lisa Stewart (TurboMonsters vs. Aliens), Michelle Wong (Cloudy with a Chance of MeatballsHotel Transylvania 2), and Oscar-winner Rich Moore (ZootopiaRalph Breaks the Internet), the film is written by DeMicco and Quiara Alegría Hudes (In the Heights), with visual consultation by Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049).

The film received Annie Award nominations for Best FX, Best Character Design, Best Music, Best Storyboarding, and Best Production Design.

Just nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar this past Tuesday morning, The Mitchells vs. the Machines tells the story of an old school father and his plugged-in, filmmaker daughter who struggle to relate as their family embarks on a road trip to her new college. Their drive is interrupted by a machine apocalypse that threatens to tear these unlikely heroes apart unless they can find a way to join forces and save humanity.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines features CG animation, integrated with hand-drawn 2D animation, live-action footage, and puppetry, taking the audience on a family road trip that metamorphoses into a wild ride.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines is produced by the dynamic duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, producers of the Oscar-winning animated feature, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie. The film is written by former Gravity Falls scribes Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe, who also serve as director and co-director. It stars Rianda, Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Eric Andre, Olivia Colman, Blake Griffin, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Charlyne Yi, Conan O'Brien, Sasheer Zamata, Elle Mills, Alex Hirsch, and Jay Pharoah. And Doug the Pug. Lord, Miller, and Kurt Albrecht produced the film; Will Allegra, Louis Koo Tin Lok executive produced.

In addition to its Best Animated Feature Oscar and BAFTA nominations, The Mitchells vs. the Machines has scored Annie Award nominations for Best Feature, Best FX, Best Character Design, Best Direction, Best Production Design, Best Voice Acting, Best Writing, and Best Editorial.
