“One of the things that we really wanted to do with the cast was to be able to be as authentic as we can,” director Angel Manuel Soto told IGN. “We wanted to tap into almost three generations. We wanted to see the first immigrant family. Not the Hallmark cookie-cutter Latinos. Something that feels like, ‘Yeah. That's my uncle. I can totally relate to those [characters].’”

Starring alongside Maridueña are Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood, Thor), Damían Alcázar (Narcos), Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C.), Bruna Marquezine (Maldivas, God Save the King), and Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.), with Susan Sarandon (Monarch, Dead Man Walking), and George Lopez (Rio and Smurf franchises). The film also stars Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories, Hocus Pocus 2) and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows).

Soto (Charm City Kings, Nuevo Rico) directs from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala), based on characters from DC. John Rickard and Zev Foreman produce, with Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Garrett Grant serving as executive producers. Kelvin McIlwain (The Suicide Squad, Aquaman) serves as the production VFX supervisor; visual effects are being produced by Digital Domain, RISE, and Rodeo FX.

Blue Beetle is slated to buzz into theaters August 18, 2023.
