Vancouver Animation School Launches New Digital Matte Painting Program

First-of-its-kind specialized diploma program features industry-standard curriculum implementing the process and pipeline used at MPC and other Vancouver-area visual effects studios.

Vancouver Animation School, a leading accredited educational institution offering entry-level and advanced programs for the animation, visual effects and video game industries worldwide, has responded to the strong industry demand for digital matte painters with one of the first diploma programs available anywhere in North America.

“Digital matte painters that work professionally in the industry are mostly self-made,” said Mario Pochat, animator and founder of the Vancouver Animation School. “We are the first institute of career education to formalize the program into an actual diploma.”

Vancouver Animation School has become one of the leading online animation schools in the world – reaching out to 13 different countries around the globe. The new digital matte painting diploma program was developed out of a direct need in the industry to create a formal program for these specialized artists.

“The curriculum is an industry standard that implements the process and pipeline used at the Moving Picture Company (MPC),” Pochat said. “Other local visual effects studios provided feedback as well. We incorporated this into a stronger curriculum for producing high quality graduates. We believe in education for employment, in teaching innovative skills that lead to creative careers resulting in personal and professional fulfillment. We have developed a fantastic school with strong educational programs that welcome students, work for students and care for students.”

The new digital matte painting diploma program is offered two convenient ways. Students can complete a two-year program in person at Vancouver Animation School in conjunction with a co-op program with local visual effects studios. However, many students will find it easier to complete the one-year accelerated program that will be offered entirely online.

Vancouver Animation School is fully accredited under the Private Career Institutions Agency and designated under British Columbia Education Quality Assurance. Vancouver Animation School was nominated in 2014 for the Ernest Manning Innovation Award and in May 2012 was awarded the top CIRA Impact Award for eLearning by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). More than 800 businesses and educational institutions were nominated for the award.
