Untitled ‘Star Wars’ Film in Development

‘Ms. Marvel’ director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and ‘The Leftovers’ writer Damon Lindelof are the first names announced on an upcoming Force-based film, most likely coming in 2027.

For better or worse, a new Star Wars installment is on the way, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This time, Disney is keeping it in the family with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) directing, and Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) serving as co-writer. It is not currently known with whom Lindelof will be sharing writing duties.

With the spotty reception of the last trio of Skywalker Saga films, and Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron being tabled indefinitely, the future of the franchise has been put into question. Another Star Wars project in the works, a film from Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi with 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, has a tentative 2025 release date. As Disney has only announced two Star Wars features, dated December 2025 and December 2027, Obaid-Chinoy’s film will most likely release in 2027.

It appears Lucasfilm is not following Disney’s 2012 plan to release one Star Wars feature a year; hopefully, this release schedule will result in a warmer reception going forward. For those not wanting to wait until 2025 for another taste of the Force, fans can stream Andor now on Disney+, with another season of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka on the way in 2023.
