Universal Pictures to Adapt Sega’s ‘Shinobi’

New live-action film will be directed by Sam Hargrave; the video game franchise follows modern-day ninja Joe Musashi as he fights evil.

The Sega video game Shinobi is getting a feature film adaptation at Universal Pictures, with Sam Hargrave (Extraction) attached to direct, according to Variety.

Ken Kobayashi (Sunny, Move On) will pen the script. While plot details are under wraps, the 1987 arcade game follows modern-day ninja Joe Musashi as he fights evil. The franchise has inspired 14 sequels, with over five million copies sold.

Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will produce through Marc Platt Productions, alongside Dmitri M. Johnson for Story Kitchen and Toru Nakahara for Sega. Mike Goldberg will executive produce with co-producer Timothy I. Stevenson. Universal’s senior VP of production development Ryan Jones and director of production development Christine Sun will oversee the project for the studio.
