Tiggerfish’s Khumba heads to the Annecy Animation Film Festival where it will screen in competition.
After a successful run at the Cannes film market, South Africa-based Triggerfish Animation Studios is taking Khumba to the Annecy Animation Festival, in France, where it is has been selected to screen in competition. Annecy is the largest and longest-running animation festival in the world. Previous films that have won in competition at Annecy include Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mister Fox and Henry Selick's Coraline. Khumba is one of nine features to be selected from 80 entries across the world.
“To be selected to screen in competition at an illustrious festival like Annecy is a tremendous honour and it's one I share with the whole team that made it possible”, says Director, Anthony Silverston.
Khumba tells the story of a half-striped zebra who is blamed for a severe drought by his superstitious herd. He leaves his home in search of the magic waterhole where legend has it the first zebras got their stripes and meets an array of wacky characters in an unforgettable adventure to earn his stripes.
The film boasts an all-star voice cast including, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne, AnnaSophia Robb, Jake T. Austin, Loretta Devine, Catherine Tate, Richard E. Grant, Anika Noni Rose and Liam Neeson. Khumba is slated for release in the third quarter of 2013. It has sold in over 25 international distribution territories and will be released in the U.S. by Millennium Entertainment.
One of Triggerfish's next projects in development was selected for the Creative Focus component of the Annecy Festival. An untitled animated feature film about an obsessive-compulsive science geek who discovers a sea monster off the west coast of South Africa.
“After months of carrying the story in your head, it is always daunting to have to share it with others – especially veterans of the animation industry but it is also an incredible opportunity to showcase the wealth of stories that we in South Africa have to offer”, says Triggerfish Head Writer Raffaella Delle Donne.
