Toho Greenlights New ‘Godzilla’ Film

Oscar-winning ‘Godzilla Minus One’ director and writer Takashi Yamazaki will return to helm the upcoming project, as well as handle the VFX.

Watch out! Everyone’s favorite Kaiju is set to terrorize a city near you - again! A new Godzilla film is in development at Toho, with Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki set to helm the upcoming project.

Yamazaki, who won an Oscar earlier this year for his visual effects work on the surprise 2023 hit film, will also handle the VFX. It is not clear whether the film will be a direct sequel, although the previous film did end on a massive cliffhanger.

Set in Japan after World War II, Godzilla Minus One stars Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who survives a harrowing encounter with Godzilla. When the irradiated lizard returns, a group of soldiers and veterans must band together to defeat the monster. The cast also includes Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
