According to a report in Variety, famed director Terry Gilliam has joined the production team of the animated 1884 as a creative adviser.  The film will be directed by Tim Ollive, a British animator and frequent Gilliam collaborator.  The two worked together on The Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life as well as The Fisher King and The Brothers Grimm.

France’s 2d3D Animations and the UK’s Steam Driven Films will co-produce the film.  The $8 million film is said to be an absurdist historical recreation of the future in 1884, made in 1848.  Since motion pictures hadn’t yet been made in 1848, the Gilliam creative stamp should have free reign.  A mix of live action puppets, with cg heads featuring filmed eyes and mouths, the film also boasts a yet unnamed voice cast that will include former members of Monty Python.

The 4 minute teaser trailer, shown recently at Paris FX, can be seen below.
