Based on Michael Morpurgo's novel, as well as Nick Stafford's stage adaptation, the story follows a boy and a horse whose paths cross over the course of the Great War.

Spielberg will produce alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Revel Guest. Lee Hall and Richard Curtis are adapting the screenplay.

This makes 2011 a double release year for the director with THE ADVENTURES OF TIN-TIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN, hitting theaters on Dec. 23, 2011.

Spielberg had been weighing several other project including ROBOPOCALYPSE and GERSHWIN.
