Sorry About That, Myers; Get Smart Wins The Weekend

Warner Bros.' GET SMART won its opening weekend (ending June 22) with an actual $39.683 million gross. The Steve Carell-led comedy's vfx were by AFX Studios, Cinema Production Services, Eden FX, Gentle Giant Studios, Intrigue, LOOK! Effects, Rising Sun Pictures and RotoFactory.

Last week's big green winner, THE INCREDIBLE HULK (Paramount, vfx by Gentle Giant Studios, Giant Studios, Hydraulx, Image Engine Design, Lidar Services, Lola Visual Effects, Rhythm and Hues and Soho VFX), dropped to second with $22.136M and a two-week cume of $97.055M.

KUNG FU PANDA (DreamWorks, vfx by PDI DreamWorks) fell to a close third with a $21.934M haul, adding up to a three-week gross of $155.83M and only a 35 percent box office drop-off.

Mike Myers' comeback comedy THE LOVE GURU (Paramount, vfx by Lola Visual Effects, RotoFactory and Soho VFX) opened in fourth place with just $13.907M. It was one of Myers' lowest openings in years, although the original AUSTIN POWERS opened to just $9.5M in May of 1997. It went on to gross $53.9M, not to mention two high-grossing sequels, which opened to $54.9M and $73M, respectively, per VARIETY.

Fox's THE HAPPENING dropped to fifth with $10.482M and a two-week gross of $50.749M. The M. Night Shyamalan film's vfx were by CafeFX, ILM, Quantum Creation FX and The Third Floor.

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL placed sixth with $8.54 for Paramount (vfx by ILM, Gentle Giant Studios and Stan Winston Studio) and is nearing the $300M mark with a five-week cume of $290.961M.

Sony's YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN (vfx by The Orphanage, Gentle Giant Studios, Lola Visual Effects and Stan Winston Studio) brought in another $7.453M for a three-week gross of $84.308M for seventh place.

Eighth place went to New Line's SEX AND THE CITY (vfx by Big Film Design) with $6.532M and $132.452M in four weeks.

Paramount's IRON MAN (vfx by ILM, The Orphanage, The Embassy, Gentle Giant Studios, Lola Visual Effects, Pixel Liberation Front and Stan Winston Studio) placed number nine with $4.03M, pushing the eight-week cume to $304.816M.

And Rogue Pictures' THE STRANGERS came in 10th place with $2.122M and $49.759 in four weeks.

Fox's animated DR. SEUSS' HORTON HEARS A WHO! placed 20th with an additional $147,250 and a 15-week gross of $153.64M.
